Wow, where to begin...
A few years ago I switched from the tunze 6100 pumps to the vortech wireless pumps. Instead of an even swap of 2 for 2 I took out two 6100's and put in four vortechs. This caused quite the sandstorm, nearly making the center of the of the tank a barebottom. This, coupled with me just having a baby about this time totally reversed my priorities to the newborn. Nothing immediate happened from this so on I went but over time I had a few fish die and then some LPS corals faded. Even my huge leather started fading. At this point I decided to pick up my water changes which didn't help. I turned the pumps down and then after about a year and a half I decided to sell two of the vortechs. I had a few other nagging problems with the tank, power supply problems with the vortechs (I miss Roger's great customer service with tunze), top-off pump stopping etc. Eventually I lost 3 of my 4 clams, most SPS and all LPS. I lost the desjardini tang, the powder blue tang, clowns, royal gramma and one bangaii. I had serious cyano issues and the glass would get dirty quite quickly.
I decided to sell off the remaining pieces to someone I trusted could keep them alive. As of today I have the hippo tang, goby, bangaii and a damsel in the 210. The only living coral is some zooanthids and a green tip softy. I took out half the rock in November of 2009 to cook and it's still in the garage cooking, lol. When I can buy more salt and have some free time I'm going to do a massive water change and swap the rock to cook the rock in the tank.
It's been a rollercoaster and the tank looks terrible compared to the pictures above but the cyano is gone and the glass stays clean for a week or so.
My goal now is to try a FOWLR, perhaps a queen and a trigger. I might introduce some softies again to see how the not reef safe fish react but overall it's hanging in there now.
