Buildup of a 210 gallon Reef

I will make the case one more time for 4 doors across the front. I think that visually two large doors would not look as good as 4 regular size doors. I think the scale of the stand would be diminished with 2 large doors. But this is simply my opinion.

This is the last you will hear about this from me :D

LOL, driving you crazy huh? I haven't made up my mind yet, I'm leaning towards 4 doors now.

How do you guys think I should do the side of the canopy? The dimensions don't fit any single boards and I didn't really want to use plywood. I don't have a planner or jointer either.

What are the dim's for the ends of the hood?

You could edge glue two pieces together. (use your new pocket screw jig and clamps on a flat worksurface) After sanding you will never know it was two pieces.

You could make panels

Uses a lot less wood and is more stable than a solid piece.

Or you could make a frame and add another DOOR !:D

:lmao:

I can try to fit two boards together, clamp and glue to see how that goes. I'd like to fit two or three boards together to make 14" so it is a clean edge on both ends.

What kind of finish are you planning? (you may have mentioned this before but I forgot)

Steve

I missed this question Steve, sorry!

I will probably stain it golden oak and then urethane it a few times. I'm not set on the color yet but I am leaning that way.

It would be better to have only one joint and even better to have it in the middle of the piece. (looks better)

Is the lumber you are getting actually 8" or is that the nominal size?

Glue two 8" wide pieces to get one piece 16" and trim alittle off each end.

Do you have a table saw?

Here are the proposed plans:

Plan 1

Plan 2

Plan 3

Pretty pictures:)
Are those holes in the top? I have seen hoods / canopies with the halid reflector mounted on top so that it's back end is sticking out of the top of the canopy. I gess it keeps things cooler in there.

Yes, those are vent holes in the top. My current hood has them and it works good. I plan on either having the reefoptix III reflectors sticking out a little through the top or mounting them so that the hole is open.

I like the bottom better.

Here is an OLD picture of when I first set the tank up. Between each doors is no center piece but you can't tell it either. I can get you some better pictures of doors open or whatever. Just let me know.

I was planning on placing a small strip of wood so that when both are shut no light from the fuge comes through.

That looks good though.

I like either 1 or 3 the best, I like how the doors of the stand match the canopy. And the more I look at it, I like #3 the best. That is JMO of course.

Here we go with some pictures:
