Butterflytown - 240 FOWLR

how is the Arabian doing?

I'd say it's right back to where it was before the Prazi treatment.

The redness is still present, I'm debating what to do next.

As I see it, my options are:

1. Do nothing and see if it improves.
2. Start second round of Prazi and expect another hunger strike.
3. Start antibiotic treatment.

Any thoughts? For redness I'd typically treat with antibiotics, but I want to make sure I'm addressing the problem and not the symptoms.

Im not excited about putting it through another round of Prazi either, but then again that's typical quarantine protocol for me

Not really sure how to proceed.

Hear ya...tough call, maybe 1 for a few days then 3?

You'd skip the second round of Prazi?

When I did the fw dip I was positive I saw a couple little flukes, but I never really found them After I transferred him back.

I'm leaning towards your strategy.

where did you see flukes?

I am big on doing nothing, if possible...
Another fw shouldn't hurt any...

will go back and look at video...can you get a close-up?

FYI, when I used antibiotics, it didn't affect their appetite.
But since, I can't see the fish up close, I wouldn't know if redness is due to flukes or bacteria.

Never saw the flukes on the fish, more floating in the water during the fresh water dip. I've done a fair number of fw dips to know what they look like, I only saw a couple and they were smaller.

I did a big wc tonight. I think I'm going to feed heavy the next few days and if the redness doesn't go away, I'll do another freshwater dip.

Here's a Video from tonight, there is a lot of spitting out, but there is definite swallowing going on as well, it may not be in the video I got though.

The redness is on the right pelvic fin where the fin joins to the body, typical place for symptoms of flukes to show up.

Another thought... Have you tested the ph and ammonia?
High ammonia can cause redness.

Not tested them and while it could be a concern, I'm doubtful that's the issue. The tank has gotten a lot of water changes, has a very established bio filter and a protein skimmer.

Also, the heniochus and semilarvatus don't seem to be having any issues.

It was nitrofurazone for a week with a long nose butterfly. Although, I now learned that it is one of the less safe antibiotics. I would go with a broad spectrum med like levofloxacin instead. I use these in my other tank and haven't notice any problem.

Other people have used marycin I and 2 with success.

Good to know, which antibiotic and what kind of fish? How long was the treatment period?

I agree with your reasoning

Have you ever thought of sneaking pellets inside the clam or even mixing it with the current food?

Actually did that early on, made a pellet and flake only clam. It nipped at it, but at the time, I'm not sure how much food was being ingested.

Might try that again this week.

I think I'm going to add some of the Kent Zoe product to the next batch of clam shells I make too.

I think soaking the food in selcon, which has fat is also beneficial to prevent weight loss and hlle.

Vita chem would also be helpful for missing nutrients.

Since, he's not swallowing a lot, you have to make every bite count.

You should soak the pellets in clam juice to entice it to eat, not just put it in the shell.

I personally like pellets because it allows me to tell if the food was actually ingested and its nutrient dense.

Honestly, I think it's a sight thing more than a scent thing. It still won't touch the food that floats up out of the shell, but tries just about anything I put in the shell.

I could try the clam juice though, won't hurt anything.

I have Selcon and Vitachem, so I might try different mash's with those two products separately.

I wanted the zoe to try and mimic the algae in the coral tissue that this fish typically eats.

Very beautiful and impressive collection! I'm impressed by the variety of butterfly and angels you have, I love those two groups.
I may have missed it, but did the larvatus make it?
Good luck with the Arabian, wha t a beautiful fish.
Thanks for sharing, will be checking for updates.
Cheers!

Thanks for the compliment, I have learned a lot from the folks here on RC.

The larvatus did not make it unfortunately, I'm not completely sure what it died from.

Worth mentioning, I received the Arabian on July 9th. That makes a full month in captive care for me so far.

Hope I can say the same thing on September 9th.
