CADlights 39g Pro build thread

The snails all survived the power outage.

The algae is almost certainly bryopsis. I started GFO and chaeto and that seems to have halted the spread. More herbivores on order. Snails, money cowries, and a sea hare.

Coraline does inhibit algae. The algae almost certainly came from the red rock on the left, but that rock still has much less algae growth than the bare (greenish) rock next to it.

My tank is quiet! First, I installed an air line in the Durso to cut down on gurgle. Wound up using 1/2" OD. That helped some.

The real trick was using a splash plate in the overflow. I had used filter media like CADlights recommended, and that helped some, but caught loose algae, and caught a lot of the pods I'd added.

Had another idea and tried a splash plate. It reflects the overflow water back against the inner surface of the overflow so it runs down that surface instead of in freefall. Now the loudest noise is the light fixture fan  Here's a picture of the prototype - just a piece of packaging plastic cut from my new inverter. I'll have to figure out something cleaner later, but right now it's great.

No noise, no trapping of debris/critters, no maintainence.

I got the new fuge light mentioned in a previous post. Much more waterproof than the CADlights fuge light/Fe supplement unit. Even the bulb is potted to be waterproof. 13W, attachments are good, I like it (Eddie, you reading this? :) )

did you ever end up doing the deep sand bed in your overflow?

yup. see posting back on 10/6. No complications so far.

Just tagging along here, enjoying the progress updates. I'm waiting now for my newly ordered 39G Pro to be delivered. I'm getting back into reefkeeping after going 'tankless' for several years, and this seems like a great choice.

Any thoughts on using a Tunze Nano Wavemaker with this? Tunze lists 39g as the minimum tank size for the unit.

california...i am waiting to order this until next month but i had planned to use one vortech mp20 to get my waves/ broad flow.

Yep, if I was going to buy today, I think that's what I'd do too, based on everything I've read thus far while researching this build. I sold off every last scrap of my reefkeeping hardware and livestock three years ago in order to take a short notice cross country job transfer. Since I'm starting again from scratch, I'm shooting for sometime around next March or so to actually have everything purchased, set up, and running. (The sig other is mumbling a bit about the cost.)

i hear you...it isn't cheap but i think for a nano build the pro series here has the most redeeming qualities...only thing i don't like is their lighting set up as I have heard negative things about that.

What negatives have you heard on the lights? My experience with the lighting unit is quite good. It has a couple of quirks but overall I have been very pleased it.

Likewise, I've had no desire to modify the lighting unit.

Might go to a slightly less actinic T-5s, but that's always a personal choice for you and your corals.

I'm running a Tunze 6055 nano stream in the tank. It does provide robust flow (but adjustable). No regrets.

I haven't gotten around to programming it yet (via AC III), but there's only so much freeboard in the tank. Too much wave and you'll have water on deck.

I looked long at the Vortech because guys from my alma matter build them, but the first series wasn't reliable enough for me. Now I have Tunze controllers and ACIII wavemaker so I just stuck with that this time around.

I seen a few threads on other sites that have said there were problems with the lights after about a year. They may have corrected that as well...I have relied heavily upon nano-reef and such for reports on the general line from cad not just the pro alone. I am glad you have had no hitches so far, or at least ones that i would consider abnormal.

Any new tank shots? Hows it coming along?

Just like the last photo, only the hair algae is longer!

Herbivores due this week. I want the algae under control before I have to start feeding carnivores.

I think someone asked me a question about external ballasts on the lighting. If that's the case, then the design has definitely been changed because the ballasts are now internal.

My rule is to not try to answer any question that would involve voiding my warranty :D , so ask CADlights before buying. But don't not buy based on old reports. CADlights has made some refinements to the design even since I started this thread.

I'm not too worried about it anyways...they still seem to be one of the best out there...What are the dimensions of the skimmer area of the sump ArtC?

Art, what model return pump was included in your package? My stuff was delivered yesterday, and the supplied pump is a "Lifetech AP5300", which I know nothing about. I figure I'll pick up a replacement I know to be a solid performer and keep the Lifetech as a spare. I did end up buying a VorTech MP20 for tank current, so I may do as you did and downsize the return flow a bit.

Everything in my shipment arrived OK except for the tank itself, which has a small chip on the rim. It's a cosmetic issue only.

After reading your comments I wasn't surprised to find not a single scrap of documentation came with the packages. No invoice, no parts list, no instructions of any kind. Your posts here are a real lifesaver!

lemec, dimensions of the skimmer designated area are about 6 x 7. Maybe a little smaller in each direction.

I also got a liftech ap5300. Works fine. I replaced it though with an Ocean runner 2500 that runs quieter and has less flow, which also considerably reduced further noice in the sump and overflow without having to do any extra work.

I'll be curious to hear of your experiences with the skimmer. I for the life of me can't get mine to skim. I know others have had good success with it though.

California, let me know how the MP20 works for you...I have already ordered it but I won't be ordering the tank right away as my renovations are going to get started shortly (no sense in moving the tank shortly after it is set up.)

Will do. I'm really short of spare time atm, but I'm hoping to at least have the stand assembled and the tank mounted and filled for a leak testby Sunday. If the VorTech is delivered in time, I'll mount it on the tank and experiment to see what results I can get at different settings/positions.
