Calcium Reactor vs 2-Part in a 200g+ SPS tank

I'm gonna post this again, think it got buried pretty fast last time (sorry if you already read it. :).

to the folks that are dosing large amounts of high pH alk (soda ash) mix.

How is your pump cleaning schedule?

I used to run a calcium reactor, but recently switched back to 2 part.

Im dosing 600ml a day with a litermeterIII, my pH stays high, 8.3 +, I shut down the limewater topoff when the pH is over 8.4.

But since switching back to 2 part, my pumps seem to need maintenance far more frequently, is anyone else seeing this? I have not checked my mag in a few weeks, but it was fine last time at 1350.

I got the Profilux doser & controller so I could expand to whatever I needed in the future.

I run fresh hot H2O through my alk hose every week so it doesn't clog but I've yet to clean the actual pump.

Oldude,

I was more refering to the main system return pump, protien skimmer pumps, stream pumps, etc..

I dont think ive ever cleaned my dosing pump hoses. :)

Haha, I haven't cleaned mine in 6 months. I guess once in awhile would be good :hammer:

I misunderstood but I don't clean those others any more than usual.

This thread is very helpful, thanks to everyone...... answered many my questions.... I will switch from cal. reactor to BRS two part. Like this option better.

I jumped in on the bandwagon, decided not to setup the Ca Reactor and got a Bubble Magus. I'm also doing a continuous water change (4g a day in a ~120g system) and the water change is already keeping Ca and Mg levels high enough, so I'm only using one Bubble Magus pump to put in about 15ml of B-Ionic Part 1 a day (in 24 increments). Keeps my alk around 9dKH. Once my corals start taking off I'll probably have to start dosing more. What do you guys use for Ca, Mg, and ALK?

my question is,..... is any one mixing their cal/alk/mg double strength so as to not have to fill containers as often? i am about to order a profilux stand alone, but have concerns with how often i will be mixing new 2 part/balling solutions? i have not decided what direction to go yet either....

my tank is 200+ gallon very heavily sps stocked reef.......im just tired of all the adjustments i have to make with my calcium reactor!!!! dumping, its a little small, and my milwaukee regulator is terrible....did i say terrible.....garbage!

I don't know if you can mix a more concentrated mixture. I've never seen anyone do it. I have seen people dilute magnesium to get the proper portion and that seems to work fine. It would be worthwhile to ask this in the chemistry forum. I believe Randy will have an answer.

How do you like the bubble magnus?

Hi, interesting thread... thanks you all.

First of all, sorry for my english... i´m from spain... I´ve got a question... when talking about water changes, how do you do to mantain ca, kh and mg levels stable??? My problem is when doing the water change, my parametrers change, a little but they change... and that makes me think about the convinience of doing water changes if I want to mantain my ca,kh and mg levels ok. We all know that the most important thing for SPS is stability...

Many thanks...

You have to make sure the parameters of your newly mixed or WC ready SW is just about the same as your main system. If it's not, you can adjust it before doing the WC you've been planning to.

;)

Yes but what if you use a salt with high calcium like coralife? You can't adjust down in ca. Sometimes my water changes bring my ca from around 415 to 430 but I don't worry to much about it. The alk is a solid 9 for the tank and the pwc water.

Personally I don't concern myself with a calcium swing of 15 -30 unless it swings down too low but alk is the one where the swings are an issue.

I use coralife salt and also have a lm3 set for automatic 10 gallon per day water changes. Because the coralife is so high in calcium, I use neraly 4 times the alk part with my 2 part dosing.
