Calling the Tang Police

I wanted to get some input on this before i make a descision.

How horrible would I be If i kept one of the following in a 40 br
(only one of the following would be kept, just wanted to see which would be best)

Kole tank
yellow tang
scopas tang
yellow mimic tang
tomini tang
one spot foxface

Foxface get huge i wouldnt put one in a 40. You might be ok with the kole or the mimic for a while if you get them small. Just remember all those fish will outgrow your tank at some time. I have a 150 and my tngs will outgrow mine also.

I got fired from my position with The Tang Police for allowing someone to keep a Scopas Tang in a 40 gallon....Very sad day for me.:(

Ya, honestly don't get any of them. They won't be happy in a 40 and they won't make any other fish happy either. Just hold off until you get a bigger tank, there are TONS of awesome smaller fish that would be perfectly suitable for a 40.

Yeah, pretty much none. If your not doing a reef, look into Centropyge angel fish, which imo are much more prettier than any tang.

this tang would work:

oh wait - you're talking about fish. :lolspin: Then no, none of the above would work unless they were juveniles and you were ready to trade up to a larger tank.

but yea - what iwishihadgills said. Here:

OK, I'm normally not on the "tang police department's" side, but I do have to agree that a 40 is too small. If you were talking a 65 or 75, I would say OK to the yellow or the kole tang (against the better judgement of the T.P.D.).

But a 40 is really a pretty small tank. At the least, I think you would have terrible water quality issues.

i thought "the tang police" was just a metiphorical title where people who felt strongly about tangs in tanks were labeled that title.

Don't you know???? "they" always are!!;)

Learned that lesson a while ago. 3 years ago I was suppose to have a "big" tank, still don't have it.

I would disagree about a 65, since it is still only 3 feet long, same as a 40 breeder.

It is metaphorical, but often used in the pejorative by people who want to do their own thing irrespective of whether it is a good or not so good thing to do. It often sets off emotional discussions by both sides of the issue.

Yeah, the 65 might be questionable, although it would have a substantially larger open water column above the reef as compared to the 40....

I won't say I would encourage someone with a 65 to put a tang in it, but I think they could get away with it without doing any real harm to the fish or the system....
