I have a black ribbon eel in transition to becoming blue. He is eating very well in my 25gal tank. I would like to put him in the reef but I have a large gigantea (14" Diameter) that is very sticky who is also eating well. Is this a bad idea?
IMO that is a very bad idea. From my understanding, it is very difficult
to get a ribbon eel to eat, wouldn't want to risk it getting eaten by the gigantea, and odds are, that will happen.
Don't do it!! Even if he didn't eat him brushing up against the anemone would severely damage him. IMO the carpets should be kept in fish-less or clownfish only tanks. I have a hadonni that the previous owner had to sell due to it eating three hepatus tangs and a purple tang. I know people say "well in the wild..." but the truth is neither the fish or the anemone are confined to such small space and as likely to come in contact with one another. Don't risk an animals life that is difficult to maintain, if you have a healthy eel don't risk it!
Thank you for the advice. It is very tempting to add him but I will take your advice and not risk it. Especially that this one is eating well and has lived in captivity for 6 months.
The 25 gal tank he is in is too small. Yup, A good reason to upgrade.
i've not yet kept s. gigantea and am interested in knowing what fish species (and size if applicable) would be relatively safe with them . are they as deadly to reef tank fish as s. haddoni ? all my reef safe wrasses became dinner while small dottybacks like flavivertex , fridmani and springeri swam all around my s. haddoni without getting snagged . any guesses how long my 3.5" purple tang and sim. size copperband bf would last ? i may wait and put up with my clownfishes ongoing excavation project 'till the purple tang and cb butterflyfish double in size .
My Gigantea is at least 14" in diameter. In the store it was about 5" and pretty shriveled up. Looked like it was not going to make it. I made a deal with the LFS to drop the prince due to the way it looked. So I got it for $50. In 3 days it was 14" and it has eaten one of the 5 coral cats I have. I moved the Gigantea to the rocks and it has not eaten any of my fish since. Fish list is below.
