i ordered that "lime green assorted" mantis a long time ago and mine was a G. Viridis. small mantis. Don't know if they are just getting mantis off rock and selling them and if the species will be the same but that was my .02$

I think the 12 gallon will most likely be fine. The lime green mantis that Fosters&Smith sells is basically a small mantis grab bag, you don't really know what you're getting but chances are it wont get larger than a few inches.

id agree with olivia, but Id send in a request to see a pic of what kind of mantis you're getting. Never trust online mantis suppliers. well, except TBS. they get N. wennerae like there's no tomoro.

Have you considered N. wennerae? great beginner mantis, easiest by far to find. That's all Ill say for now.

strait up, dont buy the tank from dr's foster and smith (unless you live in like alaska)

if you hit up craigslist garage sales or local forums, you can find a way sweeter tank for way less $$$ just about anywhere in the U.S.A..

save the cash for liverock, skimmers, coral etc!

as far as the mantis species, look around too! dont limit yourself to just one vender!

id just be willing to drive as far as it takes to get a sweet deal!!!

four inches=90mm. check it out on roys ID page.

there's G. graphurus, G. smithii, G. platysoma and P. ciliata. imo 10mm difference from 80 to 90mm is negligible.

If i put half a pvc pipe under the sand but against the wall of the tank will it go in and chill there?? That would be cool

*shrug* i don't use pvc in my tank but i know other people do. so yeah, sure it would work. Id leave some rubble in there too for the mantis to seal up the burrow when it wants to.
