Can I make $2000 in my refugium?

garf isNOT competitive, do a search here on garf. Lot of other issues also.

To start a new tank off go for a Tropicorium $99 package plus their live sand, also, get the sand/gravel from your package tray, they are gold mines. Check out the Tropicorium site for their 9.99 frags for extra for the box. You'll get what you pay for, and more.

Hi JP
good to see you sticking with it, and to see you reporting murphys participation in your project, he is an ever present unwanted guest.

Your experience bears out what I have maintained on this site right along, its entirely possible to defray your hobby expenses and make it support itself. That is the goal that most of us should go for, if we make more great, but keep the goals realistic.

Welcome to the wonderful world of farming: buy retail sell wholesale !

Good to see you stuck with it!
There are many set backs and pains involved but I agree with a previous post. Try not to ever loose the love of your hobby. Since this post began we have managed to prop and save well over an estimated 5000 corals from being taken from the wild collectively through education and demonstrations in our area alone. Imagine how much of an impact operations such as yours is making on the importation of wild caught coral.

Once again, Congrats on a job well done.

have the same goal as you Joe. but realistically Im a year away. you guys dont know how lucky you are to have basements.. the havoc I could wreak !!

Trust me . . . I know!

Trust me . . . I know!

LOL . . . I'm sure I would be divorced several times over if not for the safety and privacy of my "fish room" in the basement and the beauty of a wet/dry vac . . .:p :mixed:

I know this is an old thread, but I think there was a lot of interest so I thought I'd offer the "happy ending" update.

So there it is - 2 years 9 months later - I did it - my PayPal account hit + $2000.

How about now? Another almost 2 years later :-D

Update.

Update.

I run 2 types of sales now, but net $2000 easily.

The first being an occassional internet offering, and the second being a local only, at my house sale. I advertise the local sale on ManhattanReefs.com and have found excellent response. All in all I can sell as much as I grow as long as I am careful in what I grow. The Oregon tort is the best seller by far, but anything blue or purple seems to do well. Recently I think the market is softening and I'm not sure how the pricing will hold up.

HTH,

Joe

First off congrats Joe. You have proven over time this concept does indeed work. I have a few questions.

1. Have you changed course on your frag offerings? (e.g. softies or still all SPS?)

2. Would you say it is worth pursuing or going back would you tell yourself not to do it again?

3. How/why do you think your market is softening? What do you feel you can do about it? Is there anything you could have done to prevent it from softening?

Again congrats and I look forward to hearing your responses and progress reports!

Thanks!

1) I am in the process of growing out Tubs blue zoos and another similar blue zoo, but I have not sold any softies yet. My sales are driven by the corals I love myself and mostly I love SPS.

2) It is definitely "worth it" if all you want is to cut some of your hobbiest costs. My mistake initially was to focus on production versus enjoyment. A beautiful display tank provides an excellent basis for initial frag sales, and I don't need the separate grow system except to allow my frags to encrust and provide a place for photographing them for WYSIWIG sales.

3) My last round of sales in the winter had 8 frags per pack for less than I used to get for 2 or 3 frags. Could be my marketing, but there are many, many beautiful SPS tanks out there these days.

Still I think I have the bluest of blue Oregon Torts so I hope to keep the sales rolling

Thanks for the interest! Makes me feel like I'm doing something good for the hobby :)

Wow! I remember when this thread in its younger years.
Sorry to hear about the problems you've had, but glad to hear you stuck with it and are doing rather well with it now.

Try it out and take lots of picture. Im sure you will be able to sell anything you grow on here. Coral seems to go really fast for the right price.

I think the hobby is gaining some popularity. With the spread of high quality pictures on the internet, everyone is getting into it. I just started a second tank, in hopes of propogating some mushrooms and rics. Everyone loves rics !!

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks Jordan! I'm once again changing my tack. At the moment I am enamored of the idea of focusing on premium colonies versus frags. Frags require more work since folks are always asking to adjust the content of "frag packs" that I pre-assemble, but single large colonies are simple to market and sell. I ventured into softies for the first time today, and I may have over estimated the value, but we'll see . . . Blue Mushrooms

Here's my soon to be released latest work . . .
