How old is this tank? I see little to no algae (coralline or otherwise). I agree with fittiger, get a top, or expect heartbreak.

Here is a shot of my 2.5" blackXscopas from Xmas so you can compare for yourself. In the picture with my $75 camera the lines look blue/green, but they are metallic blue/sliver in real life. He is also very dark black, not as light as in the pictures. Also compare the snout and fin shape.

my lfs just got 7 black tangs in stock.

What's the price in England? The wholesale price in Europe is just about the same for gemmatum and rostratum! Amazing!

So, does anyone have pictures of their small black tangs around 2" to compare my fish to?

I can not say that it is a hybrid or that it is just a juvi black. I have had people argue both ways. :)

Either way, I am very happy with my fish.

I am still looking for pictures of a 2" version. The only other 2" juvinile I saw looks exactly like mine. Now that it is 5.5", it has the silver streak. Just trying to make heads and tails of this. Thats all. Like I said, I am very happy with my fish.

The shot of my smaller one is at about 2"... I got him in 2006 at about 1 1/2"... very tiny, and he was always all black... JET black for what it's worth...

Also, here're some more images... these first two from Jack Randall show the difference between a black/scopas hybrid and a black scopas, and these are scientifically documented by Jack who is THE surgeonfish authority...

First, the scopas/rostratum hybrid...

And second, the full Zebrasoma scopas... black variety...

And here's another one from my collection... check out this "black tang"... :)

Yup Got him a while back- 6- 8 months ago. He's currently in my 200 (FOWLR) in the process of taking the tank down and setting up a new elos(Promised the wife and kids only one tank per household LOL)

gasman- as it got older, did you hybrid lose its darker colors?
looks about the same no changes noted.
He will be going onto my friends frag tank for a while while I get my new tank going.

OK. I thought it may be a hybrid when I bought it but I was giving the LFS the benefit of the doubt as it may of been stressed.

After these posts and some personal emails, I am convinced that it is a rostratum/scopas hybrid. Thank you for your help.

It is a wonderful fish and I am happy with it as it is eating flake, nori, and meaty foods as well. Its just to bad it was sold as a black tang.

John-

Can you link me the description of these. I would like to read further to see what variant I may have. Thanks

Thanks Theo. I was charged BT price. I was offered a refund, but its in my reef now. Its not worth me breaking my reef up to take him back. Like I said its a nice fish, but its not a black tang. I wanted a black tang because they are rumored to eat the notorius hair algae, now I will never know.

lol.....nismo_32 what are you doing here this is a reef fishes forums??? and you are trying to sale you AKA black tang here? are you sure is not a scopas/rostratum hybrid??? any birth certificate to prof is a black tang or pic OMG
