Maximus,
The Ventrails Anthias (Pseudanthias ventralis) is one of the more difficult Anthias varieties to keep. Our holding facility typically quarantines for a two week time period offering the specimen in their care brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and will often supplement with Julian Sprung Sea Veggies. Because of their very high metabolism, Anthias require 3-4 feedings per day of a varied diet indicated above including zooplankton and floating filamentous algae, but the staple of the diet should be vitamin-enriched mysis. The Ventralis Anthias does best in low to moderate indirect lighting.
The water parameters are kept as follows:
Temperature â€"œ 78ºF
Salinity â€"œ 1.021
PH â€"œ 8.1-8.4 (depending on time of day)
Per Scott W. Michael’s book Reef Fishes Volume 1 page 545 the recommendation for keeping Anthias is one Anthias per 40-50 gallons including only one male in with other community fish in the aquarium. He further states that you are able to keep a group of 6 or 8 females with no male in a medium aquarium of 55-75 gallons, though this will limit the number of other fish species you can keep in the aquarium. This group would have to be added to the aquarium all together and the dominant female will morph into a male.
