can anyone here spare some chaeto? jlmk and i'll come and get it or meet up with you.

i swore i'd never do a lit fuge again (hate scraping coralline) but i'm at wits end. i'm throwing everything but the kitchen sink into battling some kinda dino/cyano/diatom nightmare that has plagued me for over a year now.

Algae Woes

Tim - Just wondering if you tried Mexican Turbos. Whenever I saw some kind of algae I didn't like in my old system, I just placed a turbo right on top of it, and it would be gone the next morning.

This stuff trully is the scourge of the sea:mad2: Until I can get all the calaurpa out of my tank, this will be a prolonged battle. I notice Ill get a bigger bloom if something goes sexual and dies, which inturn directly fuels it.

Ive also noticed after a heavy blowing and manual removal, that a waterchange does seem to drastically fuel it as well. This stuff really makes me question my LMB and tang's seemingly untimely death.I never knew it was poisenous till I read that link, thanks for posting it. I also dont have a fuge on this sps tank, which like you am seriously considering how to get one in, just for cheato and pods.

I did do a 24 hour lights off, and it was noticable, but like I said until the macro is gone, its gonna be a long battle.

Karl from what alot of people are saying nothing will really eat the stuff, and if they do they die :( I have two mexican turbos and they wont touch the stuff, everything but, pretty much.

justin, lmk when we can meet up. maybe at yourreef again?
fred, i'll take you up on your offer but can we do next wednesday instead? ** i figure the more macro, the better. **

karl, i've got a few of them large mexican turbos and they do great for keeping the rock clear. however, they don't cruise the sand as much and this stuff grows pretty darn fast :(

i also added some nassarius snails from yourreef but only time will tell.

Have you tried a lawnmower blenny? Mine sifts through the sand for algae all day long. What about a phos. reactor w/ rowaphos?

jordan, i've tried a lawnmower and some orange spot gobies too. the stuff appears to be toxic to them and coupled with its growth rate, its a no win situation. yep, running plenty of rowa gently thru a reactor.

Tim, any time you like. Just let me know when and I'll bring it to work.

Fred

P.s. Wish I'd known a couple of days ago... I just harvested a bunch and disposed of it. Brought some to the meeting too; put it up for the raffle because the person I thought wanted it wasn't able to make the meeting, I guess. Don't know who took it home.

Naw... You dont want any of "his" crappy cheato... You want some of mine. Mine comes "A la cart" with fifty million bristle woms in it. Sure Tim, just reach in there and grab a handfull.

Anyways... You have probably heard every "try this" in the book but just in case, here goes.

Years ago I had rocks on top of sand. (for quite awhile) Crap built up under the rocks and started a wacko process of burning organics to produce broken down organics. <------ thoery. I read that somewhere.

I replaced the sand and placed the rocks on bare glass. I then pushed sand up to the rocks very shallow and deepend the bed further away from the rock. Could have been a mad coincidense I guess but the algae started disspearing in days. This caused a mini cycle with some diatoms for a week however but I was desperate and the goo was gone.

Yet one more lame thought. Perhaps you're "feeding" the algae. I've notice a huge load of new must have reef "foods" on the market in the last few years..... PHyto pheast, cyclopeeze, this-that-and the other.. Whos knows? I havent tried any of these products. (yet) All I use now is homebrew phyto and flakes for the fish. B-ionic and reef plus are the other additives.

guys, i'll take a handful from each of you! :)

robert, i don't add anything but food (pe mysis, spectrum pellets, homemade mush).

sang, i've been using IO for about 2.5yrs. sent you a PM...maybe see you this weekend :)

argh! :( i've been out of town since friday mornin and haven't had internet access til now. i'll swing by yourreef tomorrow (monday). i'm sure john still has it.
