Cardinalfish breeding update

So here we are about 5 weeks into the second brood of banggai cardinalfish. The first brood was a total loss due to a vacation. On this second brood I took an inactive role. Instead of forcing the male to spit the babies out and capture them all I decided that I would just wait and see what ended up in my sump. Instead of placing them in a dedicated area in the sump I decided to just let them end up wherever they felt like and try to feed them there. Instead of raising rotifers and pods I decided to just feed them prepared foods.

Using this approach I ended up with 9 babies in the return section of my sump. This area has rock rubble and my return pump. The babies are fed frozen baby brine shrimp and between the group are eating a little over a cube a day. The current size is quickly approaching 1/2 inch! I'm not really sure what I will be doing with them once they grow larger.

So anyone considering breeding fish I say go for it! It's been a rewarding experience so far.

Nice job and seems the easy approach worked for you.. In the future I'll also take 3 or 4 off your hands.. Trade or cash it's all good with me..

I'm sure you can trade them into your local store for credit. Bangai are easy sellers for a store and probably Craigslist also. Not much high dollar profit but at least it's something =).. Thanks for the update.

And as of tonight the male is holding eggs again which makes spawn 3 for the pair!

Awesome. I know with cichlids, once a pair gets going, depending on species etc, they're capable of producing every 45 days like clockwork as long as the parents are fed enough to maintain spawning condition. Proper feeding is doubly important with mouthbrooding parents

I've read recommendations to give the male a rest every once in a while so he can recover. I wonder how that works in the wild?

The male has been getting around 5-6 weeks rest between spawns. I guess he has an understanding mate!
