I got my first carpet anemone and he looked really good at the LFS so i got him took him home slowly acclimated him and placed him on the sand next to a rock where he climbed up a little and stayed right there for three days now. The mouth opens a bit and you can see the inside than after a while he closes the mouth completely than opens it again. Last night it was completely shut for a while when lights where off than i noticed it opened again. Im curious if this is normal when they are acclimating to new tank?

55 gallon tank 30 gallon sump
0 everything and under 10ppm on nitrate
Ph 8.0
Temp ranges from 78 during morning and night than 80-82 during the day time.
Im running LED lights. 10 hours blue 8 hours white.

Slightly open is okay, like in the photo. If it opens larger and appears lose, then you should remove it and treat it. If you take a turkey baster and blow water on the mouth, it shouldn't
"flap" in the current. It should remain tight and even try to react by closing or opening its mouth.

BTW, your nem is a Stichdactyla gigantea.

Sorry super busy week, well it opens a bit more than what pic shows than it closes up again and again. My Clown fish pecks at the mouth and areas around and it does react to it but i was just worried since i read everywhere that mouth open is bad, i am glad to hear that it looks okay and thanks for the replies =D

If you can remove the clown, I recommend it. Many clowns have killed their hosts by "overloving" them. They should never pick at the nem's mouth. Oftentimes what we think we see -- that the clowns tend to their host anemones, and even feed them -- is not actually the case. These observations have never been seen in the wild.

Well ill keep a close eye on the anemone the mouth seams to close than open and yesterday it released hard brown poop thingy so I guess its doing its thing lol. The clown fish pecked at it once or twice but hasn't again since ive looked at it. I told my Wife to keep an eye on it and oh boy she did....she is in love with the anemone she confirmed in 3 hours there was no mouth pecking LOL! I guess ill keep it under observation. my nitrates are picking up which is not good I tested 3 times and it seams its getting closer to 15ppm water change incoming!
