I am going to get a Cat Shark, Black Banded in an egg. If I keep it in a 180 gal tank would it be happy and healthy? Also what would you recomend for filtration?

Thanks

A round or square aquarium of at least 180 gallons will make a suitable home for one adult Black Banded Cat Shark. A standard rectangular 180 gallon aquarium may pose a problem for an adult shark because it is only 24" wide, while your shark may reach over 44" as an adult.

Shark aquariums require heavy filtration and skimming due to the heavy bio-load. The type of filtration you use is your personal choice. Many shark keepers use a large Wet/Dry filter along with a large skimmer.

Provided that you continue to research this delicate and difficult to care for species, keep your shark well-fed, and your water parameters in check your shark should remain healthy. Please let us know if you have any additional questions; we'll be happy to help.

Are there smaller sharks that you sell. Oh and what is the minimal tank lengh that the cat shark can live in.

Thanks

Teen Aquarist,

Thank you for contacting us with your additional questions. Sharks are quite sensitive with water conditions and the size of the aquarium. All the sharks that we offer require at least 180-gallon aquarium. As we stated above they also will require a large filtration system. The minimum length of 48” should work but the width should be at least 44” so the shark has enough room to safely turn around in your aquarium.

Please contact us if you have any more questions on the marine sharks we offer.
