CaveMan's 240 Gal with 2-29 gl. Specific Tanks

I spent a lot of time sniffing glue & paint. But in the long run it will all be worth it. Can't wait to see it all in action.

Sniffing glue and paint huh...doesn't that now qualify you to run for President or Senator or something!! :lmao:

All joking aside, this system is totally awesome...and you haven't even done anything inside the house yet...703g...man, I can't even imagine...makes my puny little 75g tank with about 85g system volume look like a little mud puddle after a summer shower... ;)

Never thought the hobby would help me to qualify for a govt. position.

Thanks for the kind words. The up stairs part wont be to bad. But there is still a lot of pipe to run.
The thing is, and my wife hates hearing this, but this system still isn't big enough.

I'm sure your system is a very nice system. Are there any pictures of it on here? I would search for them but I'm off to work now.

Hehe...always something with my wife too...her big thing is always 1) no holes in the walls or floor and 2) too much money!! :lolspin:

As for my system, I'm still in the planning/DIY stages for my system...I've got the tank and I'm amassing some decent equipment (courtesy of some fellow local reef club members)...so, for now it is just starting...if you would like to check out My 75g Place Under The Sea, please feel free to drop in and tag along...I may not have quantity like the rest of you guys in this forum, but I'm just trying to go for quality at this point... :D

Sorry for the question if it is obvious, how does the backflow valve work? Where is it in relation to the rest of the system? Thanks for your time. The system looks like it will be a great one.

Then your wife would not be in a good mood with my system. There will be 3-2 inch holes and 3-1 1/2 inch holes drilled in the floor for this system. Two of the 2" holes & 2-1 1/2" holes are for the Closed Loop System & the other 2" hole & 1 1/2" hole are for drain and return. No holes in the wall's yet. There will also be another 2" hole for me to run some misc. electrical items donw to the basement to plug into the outlets I have down there.

I know what you mean about club members. Club members are always a great resource for equipment and advice. I love our club up here(CORA), if not for them my tank would not be where it is today. Plus I have gained many good friends out of it to.

No matter how much quanity one has, quality should be most important. I will drop in on your thread for sure. ;)

BTW, I used to live in Richmond Va., we also lived in Quinton for about 3 years.

Brian you system looks awesome. Let me know if I can help you out, you've helped me many times already.

Oh I will be calling on you as well when we are ready to move the tank inside. But you are more than welcome to stop by and check out the basement end of it once it is up and running. Plus it's always been a pleasure helping you out when possible.

The back flow device is at the top of the return line below the first floor. The idea is when the pump is running the pressure of the water keeps it closed, as soon as the pump shuts off and the water pressure is off of it, it will suck air and break the siphon. That is how it works in theory. If it fails then that is where the two emergency over flows going to the sump pit will come into play.

Again Thank you for all the nice comments!!

I'll be awaiting your arrival over in my thread...always nice to have a variety of comments... :)

Richmond huh...so, you know where Amelia is then...I just moved here with my family (so my wife could be near her mom who also lives in Amelia)...we used to live in Western Maryland...

Yea I am familiar with the area. I liked the area but hated the state. The goverment end of it. I met a lot of nice people while living there, but at the same time was very happy to get away from there.

Well I finished filling the system down in the basement and fired up the pump. Got every thing tuned in and circulating very nicely. So now I will let it circulate for a couple day's and get ready to add salt.

Not a one!!

How ever I did have a slight over flow, but made an adjustment to the feed valve and that is no longer an issue.
You'll have to stop by and check it out. I am very happy with the preformance so far, but it has only been running for about 2 1/2 hours.

Every thing is going pretty good so far. Added some salt last night, but didn't have enough, going to get the rest of it later this week.
Did discover one very small leak at the pump, I didn't tighten the fitting enough so I had a very slight drip. I was trying to avoid over tightening it and breaking the housing.
Got really good flow, took some pictures yesterday. I will try to get them loaded up on here later today.

CaveManNOhio, On my Darts I placed a "worm" hose screw clamp over the inlet and outlet so that when I screwed in the threaded fittings I would have less of a chance of breaking the housing, I have heard some horror stories about the Darts with the blue hosing breaking after some time in use... My backup Dart has the newer black housing but I am still going to have worm clamps around the inlet and outlet for the added security and piece of mind... I can take a pic when I get home so you can see what I am referring to...

Hey Shawn,
Yea I have heard bad things as well. My Hammer Heads have the black housing on them and seem like they would be pretty durable, but why take the chance when you can take a second to shut them down and tighten as needed.
A picture of what you are talking about would be great.
Thanks for sharing this idea. ;)

The break you are referring happens when people over tighten a 1 1/2" male fitting to the 1 1/2" female clear/blue volute. One thing I like about the clear/blue housing is you can glue a 2" female slip (ball valve) straight to the volute. I'm not sure you can do that with the black housing. I would suggest using a teflon paste instead of the teflon tape. It's too easy to over tighten a fitting using the tape.

Hey Chris, thanks for the input.
I may have to redo my CLS pumps before I install them.
Right now the main return pump seems to be ok. If it does start to leak again I will use the paste. Is there any certain product I should use that is safer than others?

Here is the pic... This is my "backup" Dart... I couldn't get a good pic of the one in use but you can see what I am talking about... I tighten down the worm clamps before screwing in the threaded fittings... From what I have read I don't have anything to worry about on the black housing, but I figured for an extra $2.00 I would do the same to both pumps...

Just caught up on your thread Brian. Things look great. Can't wait to see everything. Have you moved the 240 into position yet?
