Wow, it is hot.

So did a little tank maint. today. The sand bed in my tank has given me gray hair. It has grown a fine brown algae that has persisted regardless of what I've done. So today I added a 2nd vortech mp10, moved the other pumps around and crossed my fingers the change in flow will help. If not, then new bulbs== ahead of schedule and next change all cartridges in ro/di-- ahead of schedule.

Added a different light to the last third of the tank, a used led.

Few pics just before lights out. Being in a hurry and using a macro lens for deeper tank shots obviously affected pic quality.

Lots is being written about the new rage in lighting-- led's. Lots of hype and lots of skepticism. Very similar to the debate when I came into saltwater over the then new rage in lighting-- T5's.

One of the debates has caused some to abandon led and return to their MH fixtures/bulbs. Not able to afford the new fixtures nor equipped to produce a DYI fixture, the debate enabled me to pick up an older technology led. I believe the originator of led in aquariums-- Solaris by PFO (now out of business).

The front panel above shows the face plate to the lights computer that allows programing of the light. Currently, mostly for fun, I have it set to the automatic solar setting. It comes on about sunrise and continues in intensity as the sun reaches higher in the sky, then begins to dim as the sun lowers and goes out about sunset. The time lengthens and shortens with the days length. Then shortly after lights out, moon lights for the night.

Old technology, but fun none the less. This company has been out of business a couple years and this was one of their last models. This one had few hours on it, at least according to previous owner. Fans keep it cool as seen below.

I've placed a variety of corals under the light to watch for the coming days and weeks.

Lynn Great pictures! I like your taste in coral also!!! Is your Supernova new? Don't remember seeing it. And very nice Chalice but the challenge is on for your favorite as you have some other very nice chalice frags.... But that Purple body w/ neon green mouth Blastomussa is way cool. Is that a Purple Kush?!?!?! ha. I to will be interested to see how you like your LED's. Do you have pictures of the corals under the LED's so you can do a before and after comparison?

It is kinda a slow grower. I have had my piece since April 2010. It started as a 3/4" frag and it is about 3xs that size now. I keep it in the middle of the tank under metal halides.

CRASE is scheduled for Oct. 15th (my wedding anniversary)... still having difficulties getting the wife to go for even a little bit on our special day. she's finally accepted my addiction and will hopfully give in. just need the new tank up and running by then so she can finally get a clam. that would be a good bribe!

My wedding anniversary is in Oct too. Last year, I took my wife on a cruise so I could go. LOL. I did see some pretty clams there @ CRASE last year. Good luck.

I'm hoping they will look this nice or nicer as they get larger.
Waiting them out, but have given them nice places to grow hopefully.

yep, thanks very much for the frag. I've given it a descent sized rock to take over.

no pics yet. really just watching at this time to see who recedes, loses color or closes up. Already moved the first coral placed there. Zoanthid frag closed up tight. Moved it to the side and its back open. For now I have couple chalices, lepastrea/cyphastrea, couple sticks and a small frag of monti and undata.

I like the chalice a lot and it has put off a nice rim all the way around. So I'm hopeful on growth. It is just off to the side of a 4 bulb Tek light. Fortunately, to this point, it has not been very aggressive.
