Chattanooga/ETRC Frag Swap

Reefing On My Mind
Team RC
Hey everyone, the guys down in Chattanooga are starting to talk about the Frag Swap this summer... I think we need to be a bit more involved this year, to make it as great of a swap as possible... So anyways, here's a link to the thread on their discussion board...

http://www.livingreefs.com/forums/chattanooga-reef-club/2363-frag-swap-2007-a.html

I know I'm going to try and promote the heck out of this thing... I hope everyone else will do what they can... :)

Thanks,
Randy

Wow. Lots of drama in that thread:rolleyes:.

Last years Chattanooga swap was the best one in Chattanooga so far. I hope this years can match it or be better. With both clubs, it could be massive...

I like the idea of having a swap in Knoxville. The one in Nashville is 4 hours away and Chattanooga is 3. It would be nice to have one that is closer. Nobody remembers all of us in the upper part of the state or in VA.

Yeah, they rip on each other more than we do up here... lol But everyone is light-hearted so its all good... :)

I'd like to have one up here too... But I don't want to be the only one planning it... I know some of us have discussed it before... It would be nice to have one in Knoxville sometime late spring... Have the Chattanooga one late summer/early fall and the Nashville one in mid-winter... This way everyone gets their reefing fix...

I'm not sure if we're ready/organized enough to have one up here??? Could be a good use of club funds that we never seem to be able to agree on how to spend, as well as a good club fund raiser if we do it right...

Anyways, just post your thoughts... :) Thats what we're trying to get going here...

Gary, that's not drama...that's just the Chattanooga club. They harass the heck out of each other...but they laugh about it the whole time.

I would help out in any way I can with it.

As far as having it in Knoxville...the same problems still exist as to why we haven't had one here yet. We are like 3 hours from everyone except Bristol and Chattanooga. The larger cities like Nashville and Atlanta (heck even Huntsville) are all a good distance away so you have to consider the crowd size.

I think what would be better to do to cover our East TN/VA people would be to just have a smaller get together between ETRC/Bristol people/NRVRC, possibly up in Bristol or a bit further east.

I have always wondered what kind of crowd we'd draw if we had one here though.

For now...I think this swap should remain in Chattanooga though.

Just my feelings on it...take it or leave it.

Chattanooga is an ideal place if you want to attract as diverse a crowd as possible. I could see people coming from Atlanta, Nashville, and Knoxville.

One of these days, I might actually go to one of these swaps. Perhaps when I have something worth trading (which will be sometime in the future after the hydriods are eliminated -- and even further in the future since all my $1000 worth of hobby-money savings are going into a guitar in about 2 hours at Pick N Grin).

I think this coming swap should definately remain in Chattanooga... But if we are more involved this time, it will be easier for us to plan one next year???

I'd like to start thinking about putting one together in Knoxville in the future... We would/could draw an interesting group in Knoxville... Don't forget about the KY croud... :) Kay's doing her darndest to get things going up there... Nashville/Chattanooga/Knoxville will all pull from different areas... We're not going to pull from Atlanta and Memphis like Chatt and Nash will... But I think we can get people from KY and VA that those two might not be able to get...

Besides, who wants to go to the same exact frag swap 3 times a year at different locations and see the same freaking frags??? You have to pull from other areas in order to maintain interest...

Why not come to Kentucky and help us draw some people this way. :)

I know.. I know.. not enough people here yet. Just a though.

Sorry, found some grammtical mistakes and somehow hit qupte rather than edit... DP.

I've always wanted to see frag swaps across the state at different times of the year. Imagine what all you could pull in (all the different looks). Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville on three month intervals. That pulls people from everywhere. We had a decent sized showing from St. Louis this year (5 hours + away), so people are hungry for the opportunity to spend money or trade:). Organization certainly helps (this years MTRC swap was a bit easier than last years because we had more support and a number of people really step up the day of, but one person can set them up by themselves, though its not a fun task-you really have to want to make it work;)-been there). The biggest obstacle is knowing what to plan for. When we did the first one in Chattanooga back in Jan 2005, we had no idea what to expect and didn't really do much planning (reewik did most of the planning there and I did a ton of promotions throughout all local club forums). It turned out great, even though it had no frills. The second one in Chattanooga left alot of people unhappy, but mainly because that time there were so many people with 3/8-1/2" frags fro $35-50. They were the ones who got upset, though. Most people that come to swaps (especially first or second time swaps) are going to be somewhat new and not want to spend a ton of money on expensive SPS. The first Chattanooga swap was such a success (IMO) because there were so many softies. I think everyone was able to offload just about everything they brought, even if only in last minute trades so they wouldn't have to take what they brought back home with them. Then when I set up the 2006 swap in Nashville, I wasn't sure what to expect (since so many seemed disappointed with the mid 2005 Chatt swap-not the fault of the Chatt club IMO). It turned out that we needed more room for last years swap, but we had no way of knowing that until it hit and had no room to expand into. We just made sure that this years swap had more room to begin with, whether we needed it or not. Getting away from a hotel conference room and finding the community center large enough to accomodate made it less likely to be a financial failure. We made more off of the 2006 swap than the 2007 swap (and even split it three ways with WTMRAC and NTRC), but the goal isn't to make the club money as much as is was to bring people together (and not lose money). Of course, the details are where you put all the time in (contacting/begging for donations, setting up the room so there is a decent flow and room for everyone (buyers and sellers) to move around, etc., and promotion). They laughed at me :) when I said I draw everything up in CAD, but without it or some sort of scale drawing, it's difficult to see how to fit it all in.

Imagine an empire in the state of Tennessee of reef clubs and frag swaps (sorry, the entire run of Star Wars movies has been the only thing worth watching in the dismal DirecTV programming lately-who choses the programming???). Ohio is becoming a large center for clubs and swaps, too, so it is trending this way. Virginia has a lot of reefers with a lot of nice stuff, too. I wish I wasn't going away. This is starting to get exciting:).

Hey guys, the Chattanooga Folks are wanting to have a joint meeting soon... Who wants to host in May??? Or where would you like to get together to talk about this??? Don't be shy about posting!!!!!!!! lol ;)

I want to host one to meet everybody and everything, but I live in a 2 bedroom apartment, my living area is decent size but I dont think I could accomidate 20 people or anything like that. I need to turn in my form and dues too, who does that go to?

For those of us who havn't been to a frag swap yet, how does it work, and what should I expect? How much does it cost to get in, what are the normal prices, and what kinds do people bring?

Remember the feeling of going to a candy store as a child and finding everything you ever wanted (think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory;))? That's pretty much it. I've also compared it to being a crack head in a crack store:D. There is a little of everything, and as they evolve, there is more and more of everything. Softies, LPS, clams, SPS, zoas... Ours have been like beeing in a casino. No clocks on the wall and you are always looking for an ATM to give your life savings away. I'd say most costs on frags are $10-25. Some of the nicer things that people paid more for initially (and go for a lot on line) go for more, but usually no where near the online prices. They are called swaps, but they are usually sell fests, so don't worry if you don't have anything to trade;). Can you tell I love frag swaps? I've always wanted to see them on quarterly intervals (at a minimum) in Tn and now that I'm leaving, it sounds like that might happen (eventually)...

Most of the stuff at the swaps for sale are pretty cheap... Usually it doesn't cost anything, or much to get in, maybe $5... But they sell raffle tickets and whatnot to win doorprizes and other stuff... Each swap is different that I've been to... But I've enjoyed myself every time... :D

Prices for most frags range between $5-$25 depending on what it is, and what the size is... Most people don't want to frag their more expensive stuff just to leave it lying on the table...

Don't worry, Ben, you'll have fun... Most newbies are giddy as schoolgirls at the swap... lol ;)

Rules for frag swaps:

1. If you want to buy, don't sell.

2. Bring lots of money.

That's about it really. At Nashville last year, I didn't even have a chance to get away from my table for about 3 hours. I'm not complaining because I did sell a lot, but I bought I think one item. A $10 brown Montipora from Art that I didn't end up taking with me anyway!

Prepare for fun, and lots of it. There are some awesome people to meet at the swap, and lots of corals to pick and choose from (or so I hear! :D).

Gary pretty much has it right-on with the candy store analogy. The swaps in TN are much less expensive than most others I've been to, so snatch up what you can!

And Gary, where are you going??

I'd totally host the meeting...but I don't know how willing everyone would be to drive to WI.

On the upside...if it's later in the summer...I should have things going here by then (300+ square feet and 500+ gallons of coral holding and propagation!) that maybe I can make the trip down...anyone got a spare 100g+ tank I could ship the corals to the day before for holding?

Headed to Montgomery, Al... Not as excited as I guess I should be, but I'm going to have alot of changes in the move...

Good point on not selling. I didn't get a chance to look at a single table this year-only got things I had prearranged. When I finally got to leave the table, it was fragging demonstraion time, then raffle time, so I kept busy. Typically, once the raffles are over, everyone starts packing up. Get there early, but don't be afraid to wait around, too. The deals come when no one wants to take anything home that they brought;).

Look at stuff to sell...HAH...I barely even got to look up at faces.

Me and Art were swamped...not that I'm complaining...but yeah, I only took home one thing. Got it home and it did well...then it fell into my brain coral and that was all she wrote. Dang brain coral. I hate that thing anyways.
