Honestly, I like the generator and dont think it is a hazard, kevin prolly has a good idea.

at any rate, the generator works... do what you like. I like it ... and it was cheap almost so cheap I could be okay throwing it away when I am done with it.

Some guys do get fired up easy but if you go back and really look through what I said you will see that I never got too upset. Just wanted to let others know that they could be better served by researching before buying. I did provide a link that had lots of good generator info to help others out.

At any rate, if you enjoy getting people mad that much and you have 2 years experience does that mean you started at the age of 9? I have a 7 year old son, 13 year old son and 15 year old daughter that know when someone is trying to help out and treat others better than "I just wanted to see how fired up people could get..."

You are still welcome to join us if you can keep your cool at the meetings and enjoy having some great company.

To anyone that get fired up, thanks for sticking up for me but don't get yourself banned or even upset about these forums. We come here for FUN!

At any rate ... I would come to your meetings but I live in columbus soooooo dont think that would happen, might for a frag swap.

eh 50 bucks is 50 bucks, I am sure I will use this till it dies and then maybe by the one you are talking about or maybe do my whole house with one. I was just posting a fix to a issue that people may have.

This has been a hoot. :strooper: Just to be safe I'll run out now and buy an automated generator hooked up to our natural gas line and size it to run every circuit and toy in our 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom house. Or just to be cheap I will hook up a bicycle generator to my wife's exercise bike. There are lots of options in between. Until we trade our economic system in for something the Soviets and Chinese gave up, purchasing is still a matter of choice and shopping around and mulling the options has worked pretty well most of the time.

Anyway,

The Wildfire 3500. Has anyone used one? 68db. I can't place how loud that would be. And yeah I get 1/2 as loud as a motorhead concert LOL. Seriously, the features that came up for it. 220Volt output plug and all. Wouldn't be so concerned with running our clothes dryer. But never know might need one to run a mig or tig welder sometime as well as just a failsafe for reef systems. Not sure about the other one that Kevin mentioned. The 220 capable sure makes a plus.

Sorry to have to see someone getting banned. I really don't know what tripped the first reply where he went off on me. I really was trying to just offer advice to anyone that might be considering a new generator and trying to prevent them from underpowering their equipment and possibly regretting it later.

CleveYank, I think an average vacuum cleaner is around 75dB. That 68dB seems like it is a very quiet unit. I don't have any idea of the quality of the Wildfire line but if it is in your price range, has 3500 watts and is that quiet it might be worth grabbing one.

I found a chart that shows common items and their decibel level for comparison.

Putting ole Rob there in his place so to speak might have been required ONCE since he did lean on things a tad and early at that. Calling him a 7 year old was not. If you are claiming the high road Kevin then you might consider staying there. And the little roaving defenders of one of our own thing didn't help.

So if it was not anyone's intention to push someone's buttons until they hit the road too far and got banned...then why did you?

And to add even further to the issue Rob did need to know when to back off however.

ON TOPIC.

I looked into generators after this whole little net mosh began and someone in Porky's (CORA) thank you to that fishy store thread, posted that the Key element to a "safe" generator for our usage was that it had to have an "inverter". Never needed one so this is an aspect I was clueless about. I guess cheap alternator models (even honda and dewalt make some this way) can/do produce bad sine waves that can trash certain pumps. Porky said over the outage he ran a generator and lost a pump. Their assuming it was due to the sine wave issues associated with the cheaper generator. So now I'm hunting for info to find what are the cut off points (cost) for getting into the 2500 to 3K range without spending $2000. I was all set to look into the higher output one that the former participant known as Rob suggested or the one that Kevin suggested...that was Until this whole You'll may kill your pumps with that thing. 3 little giants and 1 soon to be 2 panworlds getting cooked are not on my list of things to do so looking further into this.

Anyone out there that has some info on this aspect soup to nuts care to share?

I don't know what it had... I saw a cheap 3 or 4kw generator for $149 and thought maybe I would grab one but decided to stick with my antique model for now.

" and then state it is rhetorical, you aren't going to be able to just throw words like that out there and then tell people to not answer you.

To answer your rhetorical question, I did not intend to push him or anyone in my first, second or third post where I posted helpful information and he replied with things like I don't CARE what you think or I didn't ask you.
I might have crossed the line of maintaining my cool when I said to him (not calling him a 7 yr old by the way) that if he truly enjoys things like this "more or less I just wanted to see how fired up people could get... but oh well at any rate you guys get fired up way easily kind of funny" then he must be around the age of 11 since that is when my boys were the most prone to just trying to get someone going.

I then added that we would still welcome him to the club and any meeting if this was just a case of someone having a bad day and he normally doesn't act like that.

I don't know the guy and I do hate to see people get banned but he lost his cool and got snippy with everyone including the mods.

Mike, if you have a question feel free to ask on RC I will do my best to help out but realize that you will be giving everyone the opportunity to answer your question so don't get offended if you don't like the answer someone gives. It is an open discussion forum here and as long as there isn't violation of the TOS going on it is allowed to be posted. There have been many times where I didn't really agree with an answer given but I don't tell that person they are wrong. We all have opinions and they may differ but that is one part of what makes this an enjoyable hobby.

I don't know a lot about generators but I do know what I posted before. Stick with something that will run all of the items you want to run with 20% reserve left over. You never want to load it up 100% and make it struggle for any length of time. Any circuit in your house should be the same way 80% loaded max.

I try to go to different RC forums and post helpful info for others whenever I get the time. I could just keep it to myself and let others do things that I feel are unsafe or even just a costly mistake but I make the effort to try. If I was one to just go around calling names you can bet I wouldn't have volunteered to do the work it takes to help the club run smoothly.

This thread still has some worth as a generator discussion so everyone please don't muddy it up any more with the nonsense that went on yesterday.

Good luck on your generator search. For the $2k you mention for a Honda generator you could almost have a whole house generator with auto transfer switch. Try searching the RC forums for "whole house generator" or "Generac generator" to see what others have found. I know there are a few links posted to low priced suppliers of those in the 8-17kv range. If you can manage one of those and you ever have a power loss you could continue to run your entire house as well as the furnace/AC if needed.
