Cheap NEW Generators on Ebay

Yeah I thought the Honda was on the verge of getting into the nat gas installs price range. And this house and need and since I'm not staying here. And well getting into that kind of money for something that will hopefully not be in use that much is for the birds.

I have been to 2 C-SEA meetings. At one, there was almost a fight because the officers of the club had used club funds for a meal. Rather embarrassing and not at all appreciated since my freind had his young grandson along. Now this wierd thread! You never know what to expect in the aquarium hobby! Not exactly what I'm looking for when I attend a meeting or log on to this type of information sharing forum. Personally, I found the additional info on generators to be what I DO expect.

I was there, and there was no way anything other than a discussion - no fight, not even a verbal argument - about the speaker's meal before the meetings, and the officers were asking for a vote by the membership whether the club should also pay for the speaker's drink(s) and for the hosting officers' meal too. Probably not too many people other than the club secretary even cared enough to remember what the membership decided. About as close to a non-issue as you can get. The most passion I heard in anyone's voice was someone asking why didn't the officers make the decision.

That was a funny meeting in all the years I have been in the club it was the only time I seen anyone argue about anything. The best part was the people with the complante were not in the club that long.

Maybe you are thinking of another meeting where it was brought up. The one that is fresh in my mind was when one member told another to "shut up" and the other stormed over and stood over him saying, "Why don't you make me shut up?"

Definitely an all time low for the club's "classy factor" while we had a speaker in from 1,200 miles away.

I'm not sure that this thread relates to that incident in proportion. There were some heated words by others that were shocked at how the original poster was so offended by something that wasn't meant to be offensive. The original poster was not even from the area. He just came here to post that he found what he though to be a great deal. He also posted it in his home forums in Columbus (CORA) where things got ugly too.

I hope nobody forms any opinions of our club based on the unwarranted nonsense that happened here.

Notathumpa, I hope that the other meeting that you have attended was informational and fun. That is the environment I hope we create when holding the meetings.

Now, before this thread is closed like the other 3 did, we should have some generator or reefkeeping talk since this is ReefCentral and a "generator" thread.

Thanks :)

I was not interested in dredging up mud, just making a point about how simple things can be interpreted in negative ways. The unfortunate fact is that it effects everyone in a negative way and we don't need that. I'm for simply putting it to rest. Sorry to beleager.......

When I worked at Home Depot, the Generac Rep sat right by where my head cashier stand was (Make fun of my orange apron and we will have an "officer cage match" ) ;-) The instant I no longer rent I can assure that will be my first purchase, even before curtains. With thousands in livestock/equipment, and household appliances, I can't see trusting a "Harbor Freight" special. I have heard horror stories about them over-rating their capacity (like skimmers) and causing fires. I STRONGLY recommend a whole house generator, but if you are a renter like me, it really is worth the extra to get a name brand with some head room.....

Perhaps one of our next 101s could be on electrical...we've done a bunch of plumbing, and we could have a generator consumer reports section (Anyone subscribe to the mag, to get the website access?)

This is obviously a hot topic and I think could provide some great discussion for a meeting.... "Do the electrocuted feel pain?"

My power always gets knocked out when I'm either asleep or away! I would need some serious elect. knowhow to set up an auto system! I think the suggestion for an electrical systems 101 meeting is a good one.

It also requires someone who can work with natural gas lines since that is usually what the automated generators burn. We were house shopping and looked at a house west of Bay Village that already had a huge one. hooked up to their natural gas line. Even so it didn't run all of the circuits in the house. You might still need some computer power supplies to clean up the power it produces before you operate costly lights or pumps with it.

i was wondering how long could you run the house on a natural gas generator... days, weeks or years....

because i have a natural gas well and would like to leave the grid except for emergencies and have an automatic switch over set up that sends me back to ohio edison in emergencies...

i already set the gas well up the a switch over to the gas company for emergencies so how hard could it be...

If anyone is serious about getting a automated natural gas back up system, I can point them in the right direction. I know of a few local contractors that install them. Usually around the 5k mark installed. I no others have seen units forsale in the 1200.00 range, thats not installed and I doubt you'll find a professional that would install one of those either.
Just like this Hobby, you get what you pay for. Skimping on something that is hooked up to your house for good is not the way to go.
5k is where piece of mind and quality meet on natural gas back up

Looking at Kohler website residential power, it would seem the answer is years. You can get an extended warranty for five years. I didn't read the limitations, but it looks like all the specs can be read online. Sounds like a great idea. Then charge your electric car with your own generated power. Drive it to the C-SEA meetings.

i was thinking of the one time costs would be paid off in like three years or so... then probably a minimum of maintenance and the cost of the monthly minimum... and i just hate the fact that ohio edison just raised my rate which doubled my bill because of the expiration of a program the original home owner was in...

The problem with your natural gas plan for most people is that if they have to pay for gas it will cost more than the equivalent in electricity. Since you live on a gas well and have free natural gas then you may have just hit the lottery :)

As far as I know there is no limitation on how long they can be run as long as regular maintenance is performed (as with any engine).
I know someone in Lakewood who told me their gas bill was over $450/month last winter and the electric was $250. This was a 1,500 square foot older home. I feel lucky to have to ONLY pay a couple hundred a month for electric and we have propane out here that we have to have filled regularly. It costs about $550 to fill the smaller 250 gallon tank we had installed. We used to have the 500 gallon tank and it would be around $1300 to fill that monster.

Our 250 gallon tank lasts about 3-4 months in the winter (propane furnace) and about 6-7 in the summer so average is probably $1500/yr or $125/mo. Not too shabby but they are raising the propane every time the gasoline or crude prices go up. :(

There are also options of using a larger portable generator with a switch panel and a large outlet that you plug your generator into outside then switch over to the generator so there is no backfeeding of the grid. If people wire the generator into the house improperly the generator power could hurt or kill anyone working on the lines upstream thinking they are now powered down. One important reason to hire a pro to install

Being something of a "Newbie" to the Reefkeeping "Hobbie", I'm quickly finding that it's really more of an obsession.......an expensive obsession! The great thing is you get to involve multiple disciplines (that also cost you money), like electricity, and plumbing, and computers, and lumens, and , well you all know the drill. One thing that I have quickly learned is the need for back up systems, almost to the the point that the subject should be part of any beginning reefkeeping class. Such a large investment with mostly esoteric returns on investments can't sustain many catastrophic failures. I would also suggest a primer on "How to justify (lie) this hobby to your significant other, 101! Also, maybe an occasional visit to C-SEA meetings by a Therapist!!

damm and i complain about my $96 electric bill... and look for ways to eliminate that...

No joke Esquare...my monthly electric is around $270 per month.
Wife doesn't roll her eyes about much of anything I do. The electric bill gets half a roll...;)

Since we switched to the monthly budget, I am around $200/mo. However, the tank was only up for 4 mos when I started. I expect once they adjust, I will be in the $250 range.
