Hey Hahn heres the pump I was talking about. Not sure if it'll work or not but I was thinking of picking one up as well.I need to call them to see if its sw safe.Let me know what you think.

Interesting, most 12v bilge pump designs are for boating, so it very well may be saltwater safe. Let us know what they respond with.

koraltek, the first design of that BM style skimmer was for fauna-marin. ATI used the same body, called the Twister M. Back before ATI went bankrupt (the first time) fauna had this skimmer.

Right now, Fauna is making a new skimmer as well.

man, i hear something different everytime i mention this:)
something tells me you probably surf more german sites than me so, i'll take your word for it.
so when did fauna marin first release this skimmer? it was actually before the twister?

Wrong...
\
Can you elaborate some more if you know something we don't :)

MAvgi... what do you mean? The Bubbleking SuperMarine is the only skimmer that will use a large contoured funnel (in two places) that I know of. The KZ, and ATB both use a 'large parking cone' design (the entire body is a continuous, flat sided funnel w/o curves like the BK. From the shots I have seen of the ATI, the bottom at least, the body has this same type of body as below...

Has anyone found a way to buy the Chinese knock-offs? Seems like the Chinese can get away with blatant patent/trademark infringement whereas imports from most other countries would be quickly sued for such things.

I'd rather spend double on a skimmer than support the Chinese knock-off industry.

best regards....Klaus

well, i obviously owe klaus an apology..
sorry for being a skimmer putz...
2005, and you were designing this skimmer!!
not trying to spread fairy tales, just cant get a straight answer alot of the time...

i think i need to bite the bullet and get myself one of your new skimmers...i'll have to break into my inheritance to do so, but i think it will be worth it.

rgibson,
i think captive oceans is the only U.S. importer of bk right now

That Chinese skimmer is not a knockoff now that I actually sit and think about it.I think we are being a little harsh on them.Think about it,if you look at the pic of it.It does have several differences then a BK.If were going to accuse the Chinese for copying ,we might as well accuse ATI for doing them same. The BM skimmers look lke BK's as well.A lot of skimmers look a like. Not trying to stick up for them,as they do copy a lot of stuff.Every company makes a similar product to what is selling nowadays. For all we know, the Chinese skimmer may perform very well.

So how about we cut them some slack and return to the topic of this thread.

Just got off the phone with the tach guy about the DC pump,he says its SW safe, but not submergeable. He also said the impellar was made of plastic, but did not know what the shaft was made of,or if there were any other metals used on the impellar.I might just go ahead and order one next week when I get paid.

D-R, thanks for the heads up man - whats the deal with that?! Killer pricing man, $600 less than CO for the 300 External. Looking forward to these new skimmers!

Hahn, Klaus, heck anyone - any idea of how these new supermarines will compare to the BK 200? I am looking to buy a skimmer shortly and wonder if I should slow the new 250 g build to wait for the new design.

Sure.... The nation of China has a long and terrible record in regards to patent infringement, environmental policy, and human rights, all to save consumers a couple of bucks. Yeah let's cut them some slack.

It seems kinda rude that whenever an innovative design shows up, people always post about how they can't wait for the Chinese knock offs to start showing up. It would probably be best to show the manufacturer some respect for their innovative ideas and start that discussion in another thread.

Getting back to the skimmer:

I really like this design a lot. It's very compact. I'm assuming the red PVC pipe is a wedge pipe. It looks as though the output is designed to be submerged. This has been a big time no-no for every needlewheel (Grotech too) I have owned and played with.

The outlet doesn't have a baffle to prevent microbubbles from entering, so either this bubble plate really reduces the turbulence, or submerging the output creates enough back pressure so that the microbubbles aren't drawn into the output.
