Well decided to stop by and check out the newly remodeled pet land by walmart, its just not the same without Paul. sure it looks nice but id take a messy store with Paul any day over a clean over priced store that it is now. i wasn't all that impressed with there livestock.

there dogs were really over priced and i thought they were before but now wow its hwy robbery lol

ill let them settle in and then go back and check them out again in a month or so.

just wanted to share.

That's too bad, really - I dropped by before their opening and the owners weren't there...the previous owners priced stock very high, and to see prices go even higher is too discouraging. I was really hopeful.

$90 for a tang is more than even Living Seas in Park Ridge for a fish we get for $19.99 at saltwaterfish.com, or $24-30 at Drs Foster and Smith...did Petland Naperville just become the most expensive Aquarium store in Chicagoland? I don't think even Old Town charges that much for a Yellow Tang.

That's the reason I never visited Upscale Aquatics, I avoid Living Seas like the plague, and spend my cash with Rod's, Shotank, Deep Reef, Tropiquatics, Reef Plus, Sharky's, Ocean's Floor, Coral Paradise, and Sea Schor. Every one of these guys has specials, cater to our Forum, and offer very reasonable prices...

I'll have to keep an eye out from other people's reports before I set foot there...if ever.

The tang prices were high but these tangs were show size at least 6" long. Definitely not for everyone. I believe the livestock will continue to get better and better so I wouldn't judge them just yet since their re-grand opening was less than 2 weeks ago. The intial budgets were set for the whole store, now they can start stocking a little better. Give it time and I'm sure you will be pleased.

Did Petland move to Danada in Wheaton? I had been to the Petland in Naperville a few times and thought their pricing was alright and hit the new location in Wheaton and was not impressed, poor selection and high prices.

I would be curious to know from A Reef Scene...

Some local fish people have tons of copper in their tanks.
Petco Naperville made some atrocious mistakes in their tanks not long ago.
I've bought items from local pet stores with sundial snails, flatworms (actually from Petland Naperville), etc.
Some local stores thrash their fish in very small tanks and frequent abuse.

Better to know in advance than to make a mistake and ruin one's tank...

Paul and I used to talk about the old store, how they priced things, how serious they were about saltwater. Perhaps Fish business / Coral Business may not work well for the new owners...Will Adam / Mike chime in?

Yea we just did not see eye to eye on maintenance, what filters to sell and so forth. I was there to make the dept. as good as when Paul had it or better. Now we all have to wait a see waht happens.

When i was in there last night, of course my wife was with me and she was falling in love with a pup, i said NO NO. we will buy from a breeder.

but when i walked back into there small fish dept there was a young employee reading a book and trying to ID the FW tetras etc etc . i was rolling.

the yellow tangs were big and they did have a unicorn as well. and was of a nice size. like i said i will also wait and see what comes of this place in the next few months.

oh well i guess we all cant be lucky and have a close by (nice) SW shop right? =)

what is Paul up to now? he should start up his own place. i do know his sister and i do not see eye to eye. she lied many times to me on the phone just to get me to come in and to find out she lied about what they truly had in stock. to bad really because Paul is a great guy

Sorry for posting here but I didn't want to go digging back to locate the other thread.

Stopped by Deep Reef tonight on the way home - Sorry to say it hasn't gotten any better - Cloudy tanks, saw at least one dead / dying wrasse and another similar angel in the fish room.

Jeff said "how's it goin'" - but neither he or either of the couple of kids in there asked if I was interested in anything

Too bad - This used to be a pretty decent place to check out on my way home - I guess I don't have to bother anymore

YR

no worries, a friend of mine stopped in there the other day and said the same thing. it really is to bad! last thing i bought from there was a book. thankfully i don't have to worry about it dieing on me =) that's en less my son gets his hands on it. lol

I stopped by the "new" store also. Appears to have a new staff. A few of the old guys really ****ed me off. not the fish department guys thougth. Nice new arrangement, appears to have less focus on Saltwater but the tanks look beter. WAY OVER PRICED. They had a whole lot of yellow tangs but new fish in bags. I have a feeling though that pricing will not improve much. Store looks better though if your looking for a bird or if you want to look at their pet iguana.

jmick- This is a different Petland that is being discussed here. This one is on 59 right near Fox Valley Mall. It's in the same shopping center as Wal-Mart.

I can't believe they're selling dogs there... :(
Care to elaborate, Jeni?

There was a long drawn out and ugly discussion regarding petland, puppy mills, etc in another related thread

IMO not worth dredging up again
