chinese led lights

RDHDDRAGON, thanks for sharing pictures and experiences. Your link to growth pics are worth a thousand words. If there's one thing I really don't like about forums and the internet, it's the propensity for some people to bash and discredit things based on absolutely ZERO experience with particular product in question.

I bet he didnt grow all those corals out from frags under that light.

I ( a female by the way) never stated that i did. The full tank shot was simply to show what the lights look like. I never stated they were grown under led or even implied that.

I clearly posted the date i bought the lights. I also stated what type of lights it replaced.

I also clearly showed growth pics in the link I provided of a frag that has been under the leds the whole time.

I am truly sory your 'friends' didn't have the same results. All i can do is show what i have done and what growth i have had. If you do not like the lights, that is your personal opinion.
I have shown the pictures to back up my claims.

I don't understand why these types of threads (ie. with lower priced items) seem to always become peeing matches..I run my tank on a budget and would consider these lights as an affordable option. Many of us are not willing to spend thousands on our tanks and make our choices accordingly. I have a thriving reef without adding every bell and whistle many have on their tanks so do many others I am sure.

Dragon..very nice tank and thank you for sharing.

thanks dragon!!! i think those look great over your tank. i have a 220 also as stated and might try 3 :)
ma'am.....
:D lol
corey

Since its been brought up.....what kind of growth have you got under these lights? Compared to mh or t5s? I have decent growth under my t5s but bulbs are shot and mh put out way to much heat!

finally

finally

lights are in and looking great. unfortunately the glass on the face of one got cracked in transit:( Also i was very surprised that the lights dont have on/off switches at all. it never even occurred to me that i needed to ask. although i have never needed them, since i always use timers. anyway check out my look. well my iphone photo look. always a little blurry when i shoot the tank.

Hmmm. I have no idea how safe or effective the Chinese-manufactured lights are. But isn't it a given that products manufactured in China are not subject to the same level of safety standards applicable to products made in the U.S. (That may be the understatement of the year.) Also, I wonder if these products are even approved for sale in the U.S. If they cause a fire or (Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid) personal injury to a family member or guest, the owner would likely be screwed as an insurance company would almost certainly refuse to cover losses caused by these "grey market" products. And good luck trying to sue a Chinese company.

Plus, assuming that the competing lights are made in the U.S. (no idea whether that's the case BTW), I'd certainly feel a tad guilty about undermining the last gasps of U.S. manufacturing and the few remaining American workers who actually make things.

That's just my visceral reaction to the whole thing. Not saying that anyone's position is right or wrong here. And I suspect that a portion of the American products I buy (e.g., my HP computers and Ford car) are made in China. But at least those components are subject to scrutiny by a manufacturer that can possibly be held liable if the product ruins my life.

Louis CK had a funny bit on the O&A show recently. He suspected most people would opt to spend a few cents less at a box store than buy local and support their neighbors and friends. And then they would wonder why their neighborhood was becoming so sh.tty.

of course you have no idea. All chinese made products are specifically designed to burst into flames and destroy families. Mostly it is chinas hidden plan to take over. It is a commonly known fact that business practices in china are built around the foundation that in order to prosper and be successful, it is mandatory to cut every corner and make sure that every product be made to the absolute lowest possible standards and to impose absolutely no ethical guidelines in the manufacturing process. this is obviously how the chinese companies get into bed with major american manufacturing companies like Ford, Chevy, etc..
And by the way, you are saying that you are right. And you should feel bad because every time you shop at walmart or target or lets just face it, everywhere that isnt a local private owned company, you are buying chinese. And remember what we all know to be an absolute and undeniable fact....Louis C.K. is the funniest comic around these days!

I went back through my old photos to see if i had any i could show, other than the milli growth thread i linked to earlier.

Here is a pic of my Miami hurricane chalice and pizza face chalice frags:

I had AOG paly's go from 2 to 10 in under two weeks.

I am going to get two new frags tomorrow and i will try to keep regular photos on them as well.

Ha! I've got one of these hanging over my frag tank! My deal with them is they are unbelievably awesome for small frag tank/nano projects. At the price of under $160 shipped I found them to be real bargain. For a large reef tank? Probably no. I got Radions hanging on my 180 Reef because I wouldn't trust this brand with large project like that. Coral coloration is great under these, though they do miss a few important segments of spectrum, hence, coral fluorescence can be better (like under radians) But would I ever put a $750 light over a frag tank? NO WAY! just not worth it

That is the understatement of the year. I have his new one on my desktop at work, going to listen to it tomorrow.

Yeah I was more referring to the other person. I didn't want people to go out and buy your lights based on the growth you had. It seemed like the person saw your pic and thought your tank got all that growth based on your leds.

People also need to keep in mind that the lights the original poster is looking at are not the lights that she has on her tank.

I'm confused. She showed pictures of growth with LED's. What does it matter if ALL the growth (from conception evidently) came from it? Doesn't it make sense that if a frag grows from 1" to 2", that the same thing will happen from 2" to 3" and so on and so on? I don't know many people that start corals from the spawning stage, so I'm not sure what the point is?

I am from Oregon, and pretty active on the PNMAS site as well. The link you provided is a great example, and pretty indicative of this thread as well. Some people don't like them and some people have great luck. For the record, I've had plenty of corals die and algae blooms galore under MH and VHO lighting in my 15 years of doing this. But I've never put the blame solely on the lights. There are no magic lights (or any other component) that makes reefkeeping an automatic success.

Yes I am a firm believers in leds just not the Chinese one that people are buying off ebay and that'd what the thread is about.

I use DIY LED china buy from ebay, LPS aquarium 8 months of age

GO STEVER!!!!! can you keep updating us with pics. I think its funny how people are. I try and buy american everytime I can HOWEVER I can do that when american is 5 times the price. I want to get these to supplement but wold like to see your progress.

Thanks andrew, i will do my best to keep everyone updated. Right now the tank seems to be adjusting well to the change. a few of my richordia (SP?) are going a bit white but i expect that there is going to be a few changes to come with the adjustments.

i myself am looking for one of chinese lights. i think the main problem is that people that went and bought 4 or 6 leds systems for over 3000 grand are mad that people can get decent results for with a no name led. so there only excuse is that its made in china but look at all our tvs, most of the car parts, cloths pretty much everything is made in china. so thats not a valid excuse. i myslef dont see spending money on radion if i can get a led for 200 bucks shipped and allows decent growth
