Chinese LED Lights

Consider any Chinese led made by EverGrow. I know they are sold by ReefBreeders and OceanRevive who are both sponsors here at RC and have sponsor forums below. EverGrow does sell to other distributors as well, I don't know them all.

The risk you run with Chinese leds is that some, NOT ALL, but some, sell fixtures with inferior parts like screws that aren't stainless steel, iron cases that are painted rather than aluminum cases that are powder coated, cheap noisy fans, no heatsinks, cheap drivers. Unless you know for sure by seeing one, I'd stick with ones people here recommend.

I use fixtures I got direct from EverGrow that are now sold by the 2 companies I mentioned above. They have been in use since Dec 2012 and I've had to do serious fragging to keep corals from growing into each other.

Sunspec 165 watt LED (Chinese LED fixture)

Sunspec 165 watt LED (Chinese LED fixture)

Hey does anyone know about the Sunspect 165 watt LED light they have on Ebay ? It has the dial dimmers, 2 channels . This will be going on a 40 breeder running @ 50% . Will this work for me ? The tank will be for mostly zoanthid, some cool mushrooms and softies around the dimmer area of the tank.

Thanks in advance for the advice y,all !

They will be able to supply enough light for your needs. But buying an unknown brand involves some real risks. The risk you run with Chinese leds is that some, NOT ALL, but too many, sell fixtures with inferior parts like screws that aren't stainless steel, iron cases that are painted (and will rust) rather than aluminum cases that are powder coated, cheap noisy fans, no heatsinks, cheap drivers. Unless you know for sure by seeing one, I'd stick with ones people here recommend.

I've used both and I can tell you, the cheap ones work for a year or two, but then the issues start. I have one that the case practically rusted away in just 3 years. But my better quality fixtures (sponsors here at RC) look and work like new after 3 years!

I have seen several posts regarding led lights being mounted above the water a certain distance (usually around 14 or 16 inches). I have also seen several led light systems that are frame mounted and are much lower to the water. Why the difference? Can I not mount a mars aqua (just for example) lower to the water if I need to? Is it for the coverage? I'm new to led lights and just want to make sure that when I put some in I do it right.

I have one of the cheaper chinese black box led for the past year, it's the MR 120 55x 3watt LEDs. Mine are practacitly laying on the top of the tank so I took off the lenses to get rid of the disco effect and to get better coverage. My only knock on them are the fans are loud. So I recently took them out and spliced new fans in, I ended up with the SilenX Effizio EFX-08-12 80mm Quiet Case from frys, made a huge difference. Almost nearly silent with my hood on well worth it.

looking for growth pictures, 1 year time lapse minimum, anyone able to post results of a stable system would appreciate it.

Let me see if I can find ones from last year. My monties and chalice seem ok with it, although I'm. Not sure how fast they're supposed to grow. They did, however come back from the dead; I know monties and chalices are easy but still.

"New Style" WiFi LED Light

"New Style" WiFi LED Light

I noticed that the WIFI LED's on Ebay list a new style that appears to only have 3 lenses. Does anyone have any info on them and exactly what the difference is to the 55x3w version.

Thanks

curious as well. seems to be two wifi apps as well. both lights around 140 each. but the evergrow app looks nicer tjan the populargrow app

also looking into swapping out some of the leds for uv leds

Thanks for all the posts on swapping out the LEDs (red/green) to other eBay-sourced LEDs. I've got some 420nm, 10k and 20k LEDs on the way. More than I need but I wanted to be able to swap to different LEDs if I didn't like what I got without waiting on another shipment from China.

So far, I've changed the fans to quieter ones. Removed the lenses (tank is 20g tall). Next swapping out the red and green LEDs and probably some of the warm whites. Then adding some diffusion material (mentioned earlier in this thread but the sand effect wallpaper). It's great to have this much flexibility and the total cost is still very reasonable.

Just bought and installed a few days ago 2 165w Evergrow Wifi lights. Love them. The brightness is ridiculous on my 90g. I have the peak hours blues set at 30% and whites sets around 20%. The app is nice, has some bugs like the white channel controls blue lights and the blue channel controls white lights but it is chinese afterall. And the cords are too short. I'm looking into some right angle ended 8' cords

However i should have mounted them about 2" closer togther, or use the lower lit middle for LPS or something. My tanks in a revival process. Got rodi, got lights, now to get some more rock and corals

Are those plexi-glass panels that your lights are sitting on? How well are you controlling your temperatures with them?

They are steel painted gloss black. I cut them out on my plasma table at work, the outer edge fits where the glass top used to sit, the inside is just a hair bigger than the light so the light sits down into the lid a little. I welded little tabs inside for light to sit on. Light temp is controlled by the 3 channels is app. One channels for moon lights. I keep the "white" channel at about half the power as the blue channel, That gives me about a 14-16k look

heres a better pic
