Chrisq0904's upgrade build thread

I use API for Ca and Alk. I have a Hanna Alk that i use to make sure API is correct and so far so good.

API is cheap and IMHO accurate for Ca and ALK. You will get many on here that will disagree with me with API, but again, I only use them for CA and ALK, and since ALK is my most tested item, 5-8x per month, I find them accurate enough (ALK, and CA API is like $5 at DFS online). I use the Hanna to double check. I applaud those that want to spend more!!

For Mg, and Nitrates= Salifert
For Pho4= Hanna

I too use api for ca and alk. I check it every once in a while at the lfs and compare it to my api results and usually the same

I ended up ordering the API for ca and alk. The only bad thing I can find is that the results are a little broad. Before I left town algae started growing which I am excited about since my cycle has finally started. When inferior back I'll see if my levels are good so I can transfer everything over.

A pic of the diatoms. It's looks red but my lights were getting ready to turn off.

I went to Orlando for the weekend, I saw an aquarium store the first day I was there. They had an amazing selection of corals... so I couldn't resist

It's a bad cellphone picture but I got an aquaman montipota and some kind of acro that they said they never found out exactly what it was. It has a purplish base with white polyps. I never saw anything like it so I had to pick it up.

And the finished project. I've been reading a lot about algae scrubbers and thought that they were a great idea. This is my shot and a DIY waterfall scrubber.

Here you go Aquaman I posted this one from my computer. Its the final product at my attempt for an algae scrubber. Hopefully this one works for you!!

tapatalk sucks. I cant see pics :furious:

Eddie you might not be doing it correctly. When trying to open the link you must make sure you highlight only the section of the link that starts with the http and finish after the g in jpg. For example here is the portion you should highlight and then right click and open or highlight it, copy it and then paste it to the address bar and press enter.

Chris, looking forward to seeing how well the scrubber works. And how easy it is to clean

I already have growth on on day 1! For my lighting im using an old t5 light I had laying around. From what I have seen on other threads they seem easy to clean, hopefully ill have the same experience. I have read that some people even remove their skimmer when they have a scrubber. I doubt that I will be doing that though because I plan to have a decent amount of fish in this tank and I would have more piece of mind having the extra filtration.

Thank you Sir: Ill try that

Here's an update on my algae growth with the scrubber from one day running.

This is what my skimmer is pulling out, im quite surprised that its even getting anything since this is a new tank.

My tank parameters have been stable for a couple of days now and did a 10Gal WC yesterday! My PH was reading around 8.0 this morning, im going to wait a few hours and check to see if it goes up and then start to transfer everything over. Ill post pics once i have everything transferred over.

Today when I woke up I noticed the level in my skimmer dropped a lot and is not producing skimmate. My sump water level is normal and I didn't make any changes to the tank. Is this normal? Does it simply mean there's nothing for it to pull out?

IMHO that is doubtful. Some skimmers are finicky and you have to play with them until you finid its sweet spot.

I have ICH!! Before I move all my fish to a hospital tank I was wondering if a 35hex (with sand and LR) is big enough to hold a small yellow tang, clown, flame angel and engineer goby. All these fish are pretty small. Just curios because this is all I have for a hospital tank.

EDIT: I also have a 20gal with no sand or LR if that is a better option.
