Chrysurus Angelfish

I had a juvi in my old 300 gallon Angel & Butterfly FOWLR that was extremely passive. Although he was also in with 8 other angels, one of which was a 7" male Scribbled that kept everyone in line. Chrysurus angels are definitely an underrated fish.

I have also kept a full adult in a 180 with a small Regal and Blueline with no aggression.

Did you put all your Angels in at once, or sequence ones like regal first?

I actually added a majority of the Angels together as I had a very large QT system setup back then. I started with a docile pair of Bandits, then a pair of juvi Blueline, and so on. The last angel added was the Scribbled due to size. Most of the angel I added back then were either juveniles or sub-adult. I had no choice with the size of the male Scribbled as most are collected larger to ensure their unique coloration and line patterns.

Has anyone had theirs develop the yellow ear ring in captivity?

The juvi in the first pic I posted got a faint yellow circle at about the 3.5" size mark. Shortly afterward I took down the tank and sold it along with a majority of the livesotck in that tank. It had dropped most of it's juvi coloration within the first year and a half that I had it. The colors of thejuvi were never as vibrant as the adult Chrysurus I kept originally. If I were to do it again, I would probably get an already mature specimen. Their colors are amazing in person.

Thanks for the feedback. I am about 45 days away from adding Angels that are currently in QT to my 180g FOWLR. I will have a 7" female scribbled and a 4.5" gold flake angel into it, and I wonder if an addition adult chrysurus will be too much. What do you think?

You can certainly keep 3 Large angels in a 180 as long as you have a contingency plan if/when they outgrow it, or if there is significant aggression. The Chrysurus may initially get bullied, but it all depends on how you intend to introduce it. With a larger size fish, I use egg crate or a large acclimation box and have had plenty of success.

I have a 6" female Scribbled in my current 180 and I can tell you it is outgrowing the tank. IMO, they should be kept long term in a tank no less than 8'. Mine loves to swim the length of the tank. I realize I will either need to move her soon or set up a larger tank. The rest of the angels in the tank are all juvi & sub-adult slow growers (Goldflake, Regal, Majestic, Semifaciatus).

Good Luck, keep us posted.

That's great jnc914. I won't update my tank in this thread bc it's not mine, but I will pm you my stocking plan and perhaps exchange ideas to make it better.

Bringing this one back... I was thinking about getting a Juv but am on the ledge about it. Sounds like most never reach 12" and aggressiveness varies??

I've had mine for a while now (I'd have to look it up for the exact date). It has grown, and changed pattern somewhat, but overall seems to be stuck in a rather unattractive "teenager" stage. Overall a very passive Pomacanthus, IME. In line with navarchus, at best, to be honest.

Growing hair in new places and lots of zits and pimples?

Seems to be the norm that they stop growing around 7" or so. My emperor went from a 1.5" juv to a 7" adult in a year and a half then didn't grow much before his demise

I've found fish to be very different in the growth rate. xmas emperor has gone from juvi to close to 9" now in 3 years and is in the same tank as the chrysurus and shows no signs yet of slowing down.

Yes, my chrysurus is pretty passive. But it still puts the emperor in its place if it gets aggressive.

The chrysurus would go into my 125g QT with the bandit and crosshatch male. I don't want to add any angel that will mess with the bandit or any fish that will mess with the bandit for that matter.
