Cipro or Septra better?

Hi-has anyone found that cipro or Septra to be better when treating gigs? Have a large green gig that won't seem to turn the corner on getting better. Been on cipro for 12 days now. Still inflating and deflating ever day at light cycle.

+ 1 Cipro. IME Septra is too strong for very sick nems -- seems to kill them right away.

With gigs in particular, the turnaround can take weeks, unfortunately. As long as it doesn't fully deflate, then you should be okay.

Can you post photos of the gig?

Hmmm... hard to tell what's going on in the photo. Does it deflate more than what I can see in the photo?

The most I've ever needed with Cipro is 7 days. After that, I wait to see how the nem is doing.

Can you describe your QT set up and what you're doing? What kind of flow, lighting, water temp., etc.

IME the most important step is the 100% water change (to try to remove the dead zoox and anything else harboring the bacteria that's infecting the nem). Even without any meds this step should help the nem recover.

The contraction during the night seems to be normal. At least all of my gigs do it. As soon as the light comes on they get back to their normal size.
If it is just that what happens with yours, and it has it's mouth tightly closed, I would stop treating and just wait and see.

if you do switch, I find Cipro easier to dissolve. Septra takes awhile longer.

All of my gigs do this as well. Some contract down to maybe 1/2 their normal size.

However, in the photo it looks like the OP's gig has what I call a balding oral disk, where the tentacles appear spaced out more than normal, the mouth is more exposed and partially open -- all signs of a sick gig.

I also agree with Orion that if it is indeed still sick, then you should consider switching antibiotics, with the caveat being that -- like I said previously -- if it's too sick and you choose Septra, it'll kill the nem (IME within a couple of days).

I had it with one gig where cipro didn't help, so I switched to septra - I may have just flushed it instead as septra did nothing to improve it.
I think, if an anemone is beyond a certain point there is not much you can do to save it.

You may as well try amoxicillin instead of septra to see if a different antibiotic does the trick. At least that one is easier to get and not as destructive to anemones.

Thanks for all the response. I use the exact protocol that OrionN recommends. Use the 20 gal tank, with 100% water changes with 250mg per 10 gal. at night cycle. I've treated 4 other gigs successful. So what is the dose with amoxicillion?

I would use 250 mg per 10 gal for amoxacllin.
