Clam I.D.

SO I have had a tank set up in the hopes of eventually picking up some clams again and an Anenome or 2. Yesterday someone posted in my local forums about getting rid of a few things including a clam which turned out to be about 9 inches long. The Clam was thriving in a tank loaded w/ some hair algae, and the lights were well overdue for a change. The clam is allready opened and seems to be well adjusted all things considered.

My tank has 250 halides over it , and will be putting new bulbs on later today.. Any suggestions as to whether 10k or 20 k would be best for this particular clam? and if that even matters? ...

Now I have read a few threads and followed the links provided in this forum and I think what I have is a Squamosa . I guess I would just like a more educated 2nd 3rd and 4th opinion from all you fine folks..... Thanks for the look, and any info is much appreciated...

Hopefully I can get it there ... Been in the tank less than 24 hours ... So I am optimistic ... Thanks for the reply...

do you run actinics? if not then go 14K - 20K, if you are then you could go with the 10k's.

the 10k's look quite yellow without actinics.

you also may want to shorten your photo period to acclimatize the clam to the new stronger lights.

Gary Majchrzak ...any opinions on the 10k 20k question?
you have 250 watt halides. How deep is the aquarium? This clam will be placed on the bottom, right?

Yes a 250 single ended ... I tried both bulbs and I decided on the 20 k ... The clam is on the bottom but it is not a very shallow tank .... The light sits about a foot above the water and and the tank is a 30 breeder so it isnt very deep at all ... Too much light for the clam?

Also ... The Clam looks as if it is regaining some definition as far as color goes ... Seems as though it has started to look like all the pictures I have seen as apposed to how it looked solid orange when I got it .

you should be OK with a 20k- it's definitely not too much light. A 30 breeder is fairly shallow. A 10k lamp would put out more usable light and the clam could grow faster. Make sure to monitor calcium and alkalinity because squamosa can consume them both quickly when growing rapidly. IME feeding phytoplankton can also have a significant effect on the growth rate of Tridacna squamosa

Do they do just as well if the aquarium has dissolved organics in the water column?
