clam proximity

will clams be irritated if they are placed too close to each other and their mantles touch each other?

as long as their mantles open fully, slight contact with another clam's mantles should be fine right?

coz i have a clam tank and wonder about this possible problem

Many thanks :)

It will be just fine as far as irritation goes. Clams don't "sting" each other if that is what you are worried about. Growth on the other hand might be a problem, but then again it's always easy to trade clams to other reefers to make room.

The problem I see with the above tank long term is that these clam will starve unless drastic step provide to feed them. Not enough nutrient in the tank for them. Also, if you feed them well enough the Ca demand will be tremendous.

BTW, turn off the pump and tank a top down picture. That got to be a sight to see.

sorry for not giving you the complete picture Minh Nguyen, i am very impressed with your posts here as well as some other forums

actually i run this clam tank off the main tank system...drawing water from the sump and returning to the sump as well of the main 6ft tank system...maybe this picture will be clearer :)

Roidan, that is a great looking system you got there. A beautiful reef with an awesome clam tank to accent it. We need some more pics!

hey, awesome clams!

can you tell me about the system itself?....
tank dimensions...type of lighting...how high are the lights from the water...etc.

thanks!

Just had to pop up here and say WOW!!!

TOTM or even System of the Month perhaps?

Just out of interest, what have you got supplying Calcium to that system?

here is the top down pic..as u can see...some of their mantles are touching each other...
roidan,
Very nice. The clams will be fine. I read that in the wild, sometime the clams are so close together that they make a solid mat of colors.

It would be great if you can post pictures of close up of your clams that you like the best. They looks great from your picture. I know that I would not be the only one to enjoy these pictures. I love to see clams, especially clams direct top down. Your system set up is perfect for clams. I just have to say this because I am short. I would set up the clam tank lower than the main tank so they the clams can be view easier.
Great system. I am sure your corals are no slouch either.

I think we need a much larger [actually a couple] top down pics with water flow off to REALLY answer the question ;)

Holy cow, amazing tank & great clams.

ok..here is go...some of my clams in closer view

this is a silver and black crocea...really silver under the MH lights...pic dun do justice to the silver ;)

May I ask ... where do you get these amazing clams from?

Really amazing tank, I'd love to see it in person some day ...

Don't think I can help ... for some reason I think you know a lot more about clams than I do with my measly one

But I had to join this thread, it's too amazing to pass by.
