Cleaner Shrimp says the Hippo Tang has to go...

Not Likely 2 Ever Grow Up
Our skunk cleaner shrimp is insisting that our hippo tang must find a new home. He's tired of being picked up and then hurled by his antenae! :eek1:

The tang is a good 4.5" long and growing like a weed. Will outgrow our tank in a few months anyway. Very active - goes bonkers at feeding time. Perhaps a little pudgy right now. LOL Did I mention he's a good eater? Has notch in tail fin that he's had since we aquired him at AC back in Feb as a tiny 1.25" baby. This is a Sustainable Aquatics fish. Has had ich in the past - but never a full infestation (never lost color or stopped eating or anything). In perfect health right now - but would suggest quarantine, simply because I wouldn't want your display exposed should he be carrying a cyst of those little buggers under a scale or something.

Will sell for $35 (is that too much?) or trade you for a couple of frags.

i'd take him if he wasnt so big already....need a tang to help with my hair algae....good luck in finding him a new home

Hippos don't make much of a dent in the hair algae - not really their choice of food... At least not for mine.

Thats OK - I'm hoping Lindsey wants another tang. I think he needs one of each species. :D

Jennie, Sorry honey.. I dont think the sohal or purple would appreciate his presence in the tank. plus they have never been one of my favorites anyways. Im thinking im gonan keep my trio like they are for now. thanks for thinking of me though. now, if it was a bristletooth one like a chevron or tomini, i might.... LOL.

best of luck. hopefully someone takes him off your hands. thats crazy about his behavior with the shrimp. ive never had a regal blue so I dont know their personality. What are your plans on replacements? I loved the powder brown I had in my 75. I would love to get one in this tank but im scared what the three banditos would do with a new tang arrival.

I think when we took out the 6-line wrasse, that is when he started getting territorial or whatever it is he's doing... it took a couple of weeks after she was gone, but we started noticing a change in behavior + he's had a big growth spurt. I'm not entirely sure he's not just playing with the poor shrimp. He displays a lot of the same behaviors of our puppy... a little hyper, always wants to be the center of attention, wants to boss the other critters around, doesn't want anyone near "his" food, is a show off and a complete scardy-cat. LOL

The bigger one I have will eat any type of algae when she was young...she's eaten down razor caulerpa, bryopsis, etc. Those bottle brush algae plant I got from my last order got eaten within a few days....

I might be interested....it depends on what frags you are looking for?? I got a blue from the same buy so there might be a problem, but the have a good deal of swimming room and if yours has some spunk?? shoot me a PM on the frags

Bart, not to rain on the parade, but that would be bad idea. even with teh 300 gallons, the only way I can see them doing well together if if they were introduced together. you are asking for a fight if you ask me.

the plan was to trap the current blue and introduce both to the frag tank 24"x36". for a month or so then introduce both into the display? whatcha think? stupid?

Putting 2 fish in a tank too small for one of them is not a good idea, Just remove the one you have for a day or two and then put both fish in the big tank at the same time. This may work if they are going to get along at all, Or they will just fight until one is dead. JMO

Bill that tank will be too small for both even when introduced at the same time. blue's require a LARGE area to swim. If you had dual Q tanks and can keep them seperated and then introduce both into the DT, you MIGHT be ok.

That's what i said, It does not need to be for a long period of time or do they need to have separate QT tanks. If you separate them from their surroundings and then reintroduce them together they may tolerate each other. And if 300gal is not big enough i don't know what would be:thumbsup:
Example, I had tangs that were not getting along, I removed one for a few day's and put him in the sump and then returned it to the display with no further aggression as before. Just the change of scenery will sometimes make the difference.

How big is yours? Mine is about 4.5" - 4.75". And we didn't get ours in the group buy - we've had ours since Feb.

I honestly don't know much about having two Hippo/Regal/Pacific Blues in one tank - but what Bill and Lindsey said sounds right. I had always read that two fish (unless a mated pair) that have similar shape/color would be agressive to one another, as it sees the other fish as a threat. I think I would prefer he go to someone that has other types of tangs, or no tang at all - as I don't want anthing to happen to him (and neither does his buddy the shrimp). Although, I understand every situation and combo of fish is unique - and you might be able to add him and they'd get along just fine... Let me think on that a bit more and if no one else speaks up, we can discuss further.

As far as frags go, I'm not real picky... just something I can't kill. LOL

This is what we have so far:

Purple Kenya tree
Beige Toadstool leather
Red Mushroom (1 polyp) - looks orange to me
Blue Mushroom (1 polyp) - looks more red to me, only blue under LED moon lights
Beige/Pinkish Cabbage Leather
Unknown Variety of Acan (neon orange/lavendar)
Mint Green Candy Cane
Orange Plating Montipora
Unknown montipora - is white with little round green polps (forgot what Jason called it)
Maroon Star Coral
Peachy/Beige Porite
Nuclear Green Zoas
Eagle Eye Zoas
Metalic Blue Green Zoas

I don't have anything that's yellow or a true blue or green (unless you count the hair algae!). Don't have the lighting required for many stoney corals - so anything that requires metal halides is out.

I will take him if still available.
