**Clear** Mesh Top

The mesh came from a surplus lot I bought. Honestly, I'm not sure where to pick up more. I had to purchase a ton of it on the surplus auction so I haven't had to put futher research into it.

Please don't ask in this thread if you can buy any mesh, I don't want to violate any of RC's rules. This thread was started just to give everyone some ideas to keep your fish from jumping out of your tanks.

I had an epiphany in the shower... What about those shower soap puffs? Very thin mesh with small holes. They can stretch to about 24" wide and about 10' long. I was going to try it out on my 20" cube. I have a small blenny that would be able to jump through 1/4" Plus they would block very little light.

i was at the newport aquarium in KY. this last weekend and they had it all around the top of their shark tank using it like a fence. i felt like cutting a big hole out of it and taking it. havent seen it any where for sale :( think i'll just try out the black bird net

so to bring this thread back up, has anyone located a company that sells the clear mesh for a reasonable price that does not require you to buy 20 feet or so?

i dont think you need the clear- i use 2 layers of the black bird block from HD. It is so thin it does not block any light. Mine is a little sloppy, I may do it over to better align the 2 layers to make the openings smaller

i found a site that carries the clear mesh; the smallest amount they will ship is 3 ft x 14ft, so I am going to order this amount for my nano, because frankly it is worth it to spend the 25 bucks for the netting as compared to losing my 200.00 Mystery Wrasse to carpet surfing.

If anyone would like some for their smaller tanks, let me know via pm and I can always send you some, just have to find a box to ship it and the cost of shipping.

The only thing is that you have to order minimum 14 feet, the type is OF-1581

I you call the company ask for Shirley, she helped me out with my order and was very friendly. The 14 ft x 3ft order (minimum size) costs about 31.00 shipped in the continental USA

Part Number: OF 1581
Mesh Size: 1/2"
Weight (lbs/1000 ft2): 8.5
Feet/Roll: 3000'
Master Roll Width: 168"
Roll Weight (lbs): 400
Resin: PP
Color: Natural

1/4" would be much better for our setup. 1/2" is cutting it close even with some of the larger wrasses.

The black mesh blocks as much UV as the clear, which is negligable, IMO.

It'd be interesting to see a test with a PAR meter on a tank with mesh and without. The eye can fool you.

There were several on that page with 1/4" holes, like:
Part Number: ON 4130
Master Roll Width: 96"
Strands (per inch): 4.0 x 4.0
Weight (lbs/1000 ft2): 6.0
Resin: PP
Color: Natural

What made to decide on the 1/2" 1581?

I found a minnow seine net to have 1/4" holes and very heavy duty quality which IMO would work great for this!

The net comes 4'x10'-1/4" which I found at Wal-Mart for $10.

here is a pic of the top i set up last night, i used material i found at the house an old screen that i cut down to size and the clear mesh from an old cast net that i haven't used in years. The tank is a 20" x 20" Current cube 34gallons.

I just installed the exact same screens on a 120 in our office lobby. Doubling up the bird netting can be a little tricky, and takes some patience since it has a fair amount of stretch to it. But the stuff is UV resistant and should outlast the tank even under MH. A $15 roll would cover most of the tanks in your local reef club.

I have a 10'x2' elos open top aquarium that I need to cover to keep the fish from jumping out. You mention you have extra netting is it for sale or can you tell me where you got it form.

Step-by-Step (kinda)

Step-by-Step (kinda)

I stumbled across a thread on reefcentral (mars) about a diy screen top. Sounds like you guys are doing the same thing. Here is a little more info.

The materials

Columbia diy screen kit - 10.38
Spline Roller - 3.45
Extra connectors - 2.57
Bird Block Netting - 9.97

All materials can be found at home depot in the door/window section. The Bird Block Netting is found in the garden section outside.

(used the dremel, but found the saw to be much more effective)

Great job Wav0718!

I agree, a dremel actually makes it tougher than just using a hacksaw.

When I did the screens for my office tank, I had a nice big desk top to work with. I taped down the sides of the two layers of screening with the frame underneath so I didn't have to keep the screening "under control' as I pressed the spline into the frame. Got two screens done in less than an hour start to finish.

Is that a rimless cube in the pic?
