our clown just starting hosting with our forgspawn a few days ago and i have read a couple places that this is actually bad for the frogspawn...any truth to that? if so what can i do to keep both of them healthy and happy

true percula...What is odd is that he didnt take to the BT anemone when we had one but I think since the frogspawn has done so well in the tank and been there so long he has taken a liking...just didnt want either to be hurt in this new romance

My frogspawn shows no signs of damage from the clowns.

That said, it is possible that your particular coral won't like it and will eventually be killed off. Just watch for signs of the coral's decline and separate them if necessary.

You have to remember that Perculas dont host BTA naturally, meaning that they are not assured to host them in a tank. Many times clowns will host hosts that tey wouldnt in nature, but studies that ive read seem to connect a chemical tracer to clowns hosting.

JME, its hit or miss with non naturally occurring hosts.

Check my avatar. My false percs have been using the frogspawn for a few years now and the frogspawn is doing great.

It's basically a roll of the dice whether they wil use anything as their host. I had a pair of black and white clowns and the only thing they would use was the powerhead in the back of the tank! Later, I got a pair of Picassos. I bring them home and no more than 5 minutes in the tank and they both used my brain coral. They used it for quite some time. Then they used a colony of yellow polyps as their host and now, more recently, they are being hosted by my 20 head Duncan. I guess I just got lucky! ;)

My percula pair sleep in my BTA at night and hang out in a torch coral during the day. The coral doesn't open up as wide when the fish are in it but I do not believe it is being damaged. Keep an eye on the frogspawn for a few weeks, I'm sure it will be ok, if not you may have to move it to a different location.

Can anyone show PROOF of an Euphyllia hosting clowns for at least one year, unharmed? If not, how about a logical explanation for how this relationship can take place for an extended period of time, without harm to either party?

My husband's tank has a beautiful frogspawn that is hosting his percula for about 18 months now. I can send a picture when I'm near his office on Tuesday. The frogspawn has gone from four heads to 14. The clown LOVES and protects her frogspawn!!!

My current clowns host in a torch, and a huge colony of GSP. When the torch colony has enough of the clowns it shrivels, the clowns move back to the GSP and the torches reopen.
