Just got this guy from LFS. They told me it was a Skunk, but looks little different. What do you think?

Looks leucokranos to me as well.

Regardless that is a nice score for the price of a skunk. Treat it well.

You lucky bastid:), how much did you pay for it? maybe they had no clue what they had, that is the nicest leuco clown I have seen, is very orange! Im so jealous! Did they just have the one?

naka,
What store did you get him from?
I only seen about 6 white cap in person. I think he is better looking then all of them. Great find.

Naka,

You knew this was a white cap when you bought it didn't you.:)
I bet you were doing a little dance inside yourself when you saw it for that price.

I can't believe that nobody in the line of people that fish had to go through to get to you knew what they had.

It had to go from collector to wholesaler to your LFS and no one knew that that was at least a $100 fish?

I am amazed and envious.

It's one of the nicest I have ever seen.

Just going through old threads and found this. I wanted to bring this back up because I am amazed and want to know where this fish was bought?!

kind of looks like an amphiprion nigripes to me but you never know. white caps normally have spaces between the cap but I am sure anything can happen. either way great buy and beautiful fish. I will trade you for some of my orange skunk babies. ;)

A. nigripes would have black ventral and anal fins. Body shape is similar though, and I have seen some almost that orange.

The markings on white caps are quite variable (since it is a hybrid). The connected cap and head bar is a very common variation.

it appeared to be a juvenile and I thought they got the dark underside later in life like alot of clowns. You really believe the hybrid theory? I am not so sure what to believe about that since people are confused about several species. amphiprion theillie for example is said to have been discovered in a pet store and I have seen places that say the fish was actually first documented in 1908. it seems none of us will ever know. I don't see chyrsopterus in it at all.
What 2 species are they saying the leucokranos is?
I think I finally found a pair of nigripes actually . the guy said there may be another pair available I will try to keep you posted.

Small doesn't always mean juvenile. I have seen a lot of nigripes that were small <1.5 and all have had black belly fins. Small fish can be old, they just aren't the dominant fish in their anemone, so they don't grow.

In the early 90's a pairs of leukocranos spawned at the Birch Aquarium in San Diego. At least one batch of babies was raised. I was lucky enough to see the tank of babies myself. The parents had not bred true. The markings on the babies ranged from two complete side bars only to one skunk stripe only and everything in between. Only about 25% of the babies had "classic" white cap markings. The failure to breed true would mean it is not a species.

Later (or maybe before) a Chrysopterus x sandaracinos(orange skunk) pair was discovered with eggs in the New Guinea/Soloman Islands area, where you find white caps.

From what I understand, it is not uncommon to find white caps paired with chrysopterus or sandaracinos clowns in the wild.

As for the nigripes, I have seen some in my area lately, so somebody is bringing them in right now. Good Luck

Very true. I have a small WC specimen that just arrived at .75".

OK the joke is over. This fish was sent to me from a friend of mine in California. He asked me if I was interested in a Hybrid Clown fish. I had to post it here on RC to see the responses. It's a cross between A. Chrysopterus and A. Perideraion is what he told me. Looks like A. leucokranos, so who cares. If I can get some more I'll post it here in this forum. Please don't PM me, I'll let you know if I can get more.

Is this a wild caught clown or was it captive born? The fish is nice, but I am more interested in the parents. If it was wild caught there is no way you could know the parents for sure. But, if some one is breeding hybrid clowns in California, that would be very cool to know.

Quite sure it was wild caught.

Clown breeders are in a small community, we would know ;>)
