clown spawn

I'm pulling for you, Fizhstiks...I really hope these two make it.

Are you just rearing one "batch" of fry at a time?

I couldn't have done it without crpeck's help. Thank you for helping me through this.

The two larvae are still alive. The one that was spinning yesterday is still swimming weird today. Most of the time, he swims like he's trying to stick his head out of the water and sometimes he'll swim on his back. Other times, he will swim normally and lunge at a few rotifers. Sometimes when he's swimming normally, he will start to waggle like a clownfish. Is there something wrong with him?

The other one is doing great. He is always swimming normally and lunging at rotifers. Both are turning orange. Today is the tenth day since they hatched. When should i expect them to get their stripe?

thanks

YAY! I was hoping we'd hear good news from you today. That was a close call. When they spin like that one was, it's usually before they go down for good.

He may be a little blocked up since he's still swimming funny. I honestly don't know. But it looks like he's your little pig about eating so watch him closely each time you add shrimp to see if you need to cut the lights on him again. Does his gut look bigger or swolen compared to the other? Any red spots?

The curl/waggle sounds like normal swim confusion as they approach metamorphosis. They've been swimming like a larvae without so many fins to manage. Now they need to learn to swim like a clownfish.

Here is a pic of a juvenile just after metamorphosis. See the little fat orange fish body with a touch of white on the head? You'll probably have them looking like this within the next 24 hours. This picture and the previous one I posted at 11 days are from two different batches.

Within a day of this last look, they'll look like the one I posted above at 11 days.

The next pic I have in my gallery isn't until 24 days. By then, they've got top and bottom fins and are starting to get the waggle side fins.

I'll check through my pictures to find something in between. I know I took lots of pics. They get one stripe at a time. You'll see the stripe come on their heads first and you'll have those within a couple of days.

So glad the little guy made it. I've been worrying about it today and am happy to see your post.

You're soooooooooo close to making it through.

Good luck!
Cathy

Found a couple more pictures.

Here is a close up from day 14. See how we're starting to get the 2nd stripe? But fins are not developed yet.

Here is a pic of the 2nd batch at day 13. This gives you an idea of how small they are compared to the thermometer and also, you can see that some are still turning orange while others are getting a 2nd stripe.

Let's get you through metamorphosis before we get you too psyched up about where this is going.

Those babies have a really hard couple of days ahead and it is easy to lose them now.

Time to cross fingers and just see how they do.

I hope i can get mine that far. Not much to say today, they dont look any different, but the one that was spinning isnt swimming at the top as much :D

nevermind, he's still swimming weird, i guess i just happened to look at him when he wasnt swimming at the top...

I really don't know what the deal is with the weird swimmer. You'll know soon enough if something is wrong. He'll either make it through mm and swim totally different anyway or he won't make it.

It can take up to 14 days to make it all the way through metamorphosis. Occasionally longer.

When they swim, you'll see them kind of stop for a second and curl their tail. That's the sign that they'll really be changing within a couple of days.

Thanks for the update. We're pulling for you.

btw ... If you're thinking of raising out the batch of eggs coming next, you'll need to do it in a separate rearing tank until both sets have made it through mm and are weaned to flake. Then you can put the batches together.

Yeah, im going to setup another 10 next to this one so i can raise the next batch of eggs.

I was able to get a couple of pics of them (terrible pics, these were the best ones i could get):

i think so, but im not sure, they were both swimming normally when i took the pics. Why? Is there something wrong with him?

I'm not sure ... you can't really tell with the resolution online. But I've suspected that the weird swimming might be related to a problem in his gut.

You've got a great shot of him that you can zero in on with the higher resolution you have on your computer.

Magnify down on that gut to see if you see any red spots like little blood spots or if it looks like he's overstuffed.

Not that you can do much about it, but it would be helpful to know.

Both of them are still alive, they look the same as they did yesterday. Shouldn't they be getting color or something? theyre still brownish orange.

11 - 14 days is the average, but sometimes they'll take longer. You're sure they're Ocellaris, right? Percula clowns take longer. When it starts, it happens fast.

Glad to hear they're still okay. Thanks for the update.

Hang in there ....

Both are still alive, they still look the same. The one that swims normally is starting to do the clownfish waggle swim :D

I think the one that swims weird was doing this today. He sat in place for a while with his tail curled up. Then he started swimming weird again.

i hope they start changing soon :D

also, it looks like the current nest might hatch tonight, i set up another 10 on my desk today. hopefully more survive this time :D

It sounds like they're getting close.

You'll be busy with two batches going.

How are you getting the larvae out of the parent tank? I had the best luck using a penlight flashlight and a soup bowl. When I tried to siphon, I lost too many ... I think it was too rough on them.

When everything was dark, pumps off and water still, the little larvae would swim to the light and I could scoop a bunch of them at once, then very gently put them in the rearing tank.

Good luck!

Cathy
