clown spawn

I think they are going through meta, I just saw one doing the clownfish waggle swim :D

Should i try brine shrimp this weekend, or should i wait until they've gone threw meta before introducing a new food? Is brine shrimp necessary because it seems it would be easier just continuing rotifers while trying to get them adjusted to flakes.

Oh, and my clowns just laid about 300 eggs so ill have to set up another ten soon...

I culture triggerpods in 5gl buckets

but those are way too big for them- i would only assume because they are too big for dwarf seahorse fry

anyways-
i suggest getting lots of packages- maybe 5- and pour two into your fry tank to gain density when they are placed into the tank
and then the other three into a bucket to start a back up culture once the rots in the fry tank have been sevearly dented-

i suggest you do this as soon as they lay eggs- which i guess is too late now- but for future

i cant wait till i get my clowns- i want them to breed i think that would be cool!!!

Lastly .... you may not be doing anything wrong.

They're very fragile and in nature the odds of survival are 1 in many thousands of larvae.

Most people lose a significant portion of larvae out of every batch along various stages .... it's just harder to take when you're working with a smaller batch.

I remember losing one two months into it. I was moving babies among the tanks and rearranging things and I think he just had a fright response and died from stress. I felt terrible.

When I had the biggest batch, sometimes I'd lose them during water changes. It became almost impossible to clean the bottom of the tank without siphoning a baby or two.

It's just not easy. Sometimes you just lose them even if you do everything right .... or at least as good as you can. This is why most people don't have the time or patience to try raising fry.

You've come this far and put this much into it. Hang in there and one of these batches will work for you.

i just want to second what.. he/she (sorry) said- because this is crucial in any fry raising-
fry are fragile and you can be doing everything right and then they will just die on you and it frustrating and saddening but you wrk through it and try and work harder- your work on this is inspiring to me-
i though raising dwarf seahorses and their fry was difficult but this looks so complicated!!!!

but with seahorses you have a couple dieoff stages
1week 2week 8weeks (or something like that)
i had 30fry going for 2months or a little less than that- and they all just started dropping and i couldnt figure out why- but again fry are fragile- and i think its amazing you have come this far and shown this much dedication-

i do have a question- what do u do with the eggs that you dont try to rear

Ok i hate this, my rotifer culture got wiped out somehow. I just checked on them yesterday and they were fine. I come home today and all i have is a cloudy bucket of water :mad2:

All the rotifers are gone and i don't know what killed them. Maybe it got too hot in the bucket? I am keeping them in a room that does get kinda hot. I still have some in the clownfish larvae tank and i think that they are breeding in there but now i have no culture and no food for the next batch.

I have tried to raise almost every single nest that they've laid, but the few that i did skip, i just left them to hatch in the tank. They become food for the other fish or get sucked up by the filter.

oh ok that works haha
im trying to read up as much as i can in advance- im getting my tank tomorrow- and clowns will be the last thing i add to my tank- mostly for aggresssion reasons

im also debating if i should have a clown only tank and have it completely devoted to them- but i like the reef idea!
i dont have a thred about my tank - but prolly should haha

All the rotifers in the fry tank are gone this morning :(

I'm hatching brine right now and have been trying to get the clowns adjusted to flakes too. I also replaced 90% of the water and kept all the mud at the bottom of the culture to see if the rotifers left any eggs behind when they died. Supposedly, the produce eggs when they are stressed and you can start a culture from that?

There's only 16 larvae left now

What day is this since the hatch? I'm thinking this is a bad day to be without rotifers. Can Reed Mariculture get you some quickly? It's right there in your state ... but that may even take too long. If the culture can regenerate, it will take longer than you have so I wouldn't count on it now.

Did you watch the rotifer density in your culture and cull? If the density gets too high, the culture will crash. Your clue that they're stressed is when you see very many of the fast swimming little male rotifers when you look with a magnifying glass.

Are you near a Petco? Hikari makes a product called "First Bites" which is a larvae rearing food. It's literally a powder. If you try flake, pulverize it down to the consistency of almost flour to be small enough so as not to choke them. It's a long shot, but you're right to try anything that might work.

Try not to do a water change that big again until after they're finished with MM.

Oh dear ... things were going so much better this time. Keep us posted. Hopefully these little fry will figure out that they need to eat what you give them.

GOOD LUCK!
Cathy

I just reread your posts and see that you are past or into MM.

The bad news is that this is a peak period of stress when you usually loose some.

The good news is that they are old enough that you have a decent shot to make it with brine and flake

Let us know and I'm crossing my fingers for you.

Wardley (brand) Premium Small Fry® is a liquid food for all baby fish.

Petsmart has this! Good Luck!

Today is the 10th day since hatch so they should be going through meta now, right? Their body shape has already changed...

I decapsulated some brine shrimp eggs a few hours ago so hopefully they'll hatch tonight. I am also feeding them powdered flakes (i used a mortar and pestle) and i think they MAY be eating it because a few of the clowns have some pretty big stomachs.

Im going to petco today so ill look for the food that D-rod posted and it they have that, i might give it a try.

Yeah ... they're right in the middle ... day 11 is the peak stress day for losses.

Hang in there.

I think they are eating the flakes, their stomachs are turning orange/red.

When is it safe to do water changes? I am woried about rising ammonia and nitrite because of the flake food.
