Clownfish giving an anemone a "haircut?"

When I first got my H. magnifica, I would occasionally see what I could swear to be portions of its tentacles floating in the water column from time to time. I couldn't figure out how it was happening but I suspected that my Ocellaris clowns were being a little vigorous and basically giving it a "haircut." Every time I looked though, they were behaving.

Last night, I unfortunately had an E. quad wander and get caught up in a closed loop drain. This morning when I restarted that pump some tentacle bearing chunks of the anemone blew out the return. My clowns promptly ate them. None of the other fish went near them. This seems like pretty interesting behavior. Now, I'm convinced that the clowns must have been the reason for the original haircuts.

Has anyone ever had a clown actually eat tentacles before? or read about the reason for this behavior? I'd like to learn why.
