Clownfish jumping stories?

The man, The Legend
I currently have an eggcrate for the hood of tank because I'm scared the clowns will jump on me one night or when I'm not home. How often does this occur? I hear they only jump when something really goes wrong, but do you guys suggest?

by the way I have a baby b&w Ocellaris and a regular Occ.

Yes it happens. During the summer months I was finding 5-10 per month on the floor. I also had them jump from 1 tank to the tank along side it. Since I have ocellaris, tomato, & black & white clowns it's easy to tell. BTW, the Giants used to be my favorite team when I lived in N.J. now my 2nd favorite. Go CARDS!

oh man! You quit on me! haha ..It's okay though I'm a fan of Fitzgerald and Boldin

And thats crazy..I'm going to be paranoid again!! Is there a way to prevent this?

Do you have eggcrate? Do you know how this is preventable, I'm going to FREAK OUT! haha..what cause them to jump out in the first place?

Clowns don't have a major rep for jumping like some fish do(I just lost 2 helfrichi's, and I have a net cover, and they STILL both got out!)
I've never had a cover over clown tanks, and never had jumpers, except my maroon wanted to bite me so bad she flew out of the tank trying to bite me, hit the floor.
She never liked me cleaning close to her nems.
However, my friend did lose a picasso not long ago, but I'm guessing it was startled, or chased out.

Oh, BTW, may want to look into the birdnetting, which works well w/ the vinyl window screen kits from home depot, both fairly cheap, easy, and doesn't block light like eggcrate.

Thanks ! That looks like a nice little weekend project

All of my tanks have open tops. Been keeping clowns pretty much since 1992, in all that time I have only had one clown jump -- the same one twice. One time I was able to get it back in the tank, the other time I wasn't so lucky. While I didn't see it happen, I am positive it was the female clown that caused it. For the first couple of months they got along great, then the female became very aggressive to the male.

When I first got my new (( back in Jan )) SI perc pair I put some egg create over the tank until they were settled in. The main reason I put the egg create over the tank because they weren't cheap. I have had the egg create off the tank for the last 7 months or so.

BTW -- the one that I lost was a B&W Ocellaris.

Very true! One of the main reasons why I'm keeping the egg crate on for now is not just to let me sleep at night (So I'm not worried about them jumping) but, also because I paid a pretty hefty amount for the pair, more than most people would pay for Occ's ! But it was worth it! Thanks for your help I hope they dont jump!!:bounce1:

fingers x'ed this doesn't jinx me. last time i posted on this subject the next day my nigripes jumped from it's smallish anemone when i sat down and opened a magazine. had it six years when it did that. landed in a empty salt bucket. true story.
first display tank jumping clown after decades of being in the hobby and having kept a few maroon's and a tomato and a saddleback. well actually the polymnus jumped from a rapidly overheating q.t. but that doesn't count.

She never liked me cleaning close to her nems.

Same thing happened to me in a fish store once. I was pointing a maroon clown and her anemone out to somebody (they were in a BC w/no lid), and she leapt out of the tank in a perfect arc trying to bite me. I scooped the maroon up and plopped her back in the tank, and she just snuggled back down in her nem and glared at me. Cracked me up. :lmao:

You know, my maroon bit me so many times(drawing blood) and broke so many corals head butting them away from her nem, I actually tried to remove her several times, but she always slept UNDER her nem, I couldn't even catch her at night cause by the time I'd find her w/ flashlight on, she'd wake up.
She had just accepted a mate(finally at 3rd try) and as I saw her on the floor, I came so close to ditching her butt.

Oh, and this is why it was so hard to find her under her nem, lots of real estate!
She's at about 3" in this pic.

Wow Davocean very nice photo! Looks wonderful! Sorry about the post guys hope it doesnt bring bag luck! :/

Carlos, thats nuts! I'm freaking out about my new clowns now!!

some one on these forums built a nice fish keeper in thingy. they built a frame out of wood and then used some sort of net like screening and it hardly blocks light if any at all.
