Hi all, my clowns just hatched and im having my first attempt at breeding. If you click this link http://80.192.130.182:88/ or copy and paste into your browser and type in guest as your user name and password it takes you to a live feed of my fry tank. Don't know if I will be able to keep any alive but thought it would be good to have a try
The lights are all off now so the pics not to good due to night vision being on.

Do you have your rotifers ready to feed. If not get some and wait till the next batch. About 12-14 days. its always better to let the first 3-4 clutches go anyway.

I'm well prepared mate, the clowns have been hatching for years but I thought it was about time I had a go at saving them. I have 2 salt buckets full of rots.

Observations so far

Hatch Night: Removed fry using syphon meathod, used torch above tank and left for 10 mins. Removal of about 200 fry took less than 5 mins. Placed the fry into the fry tank and turned the lights off for 6 hours. Fry tank had earlier had some rotifiers added to it and a small amount of zm dry invert feed to start to co culture the rotifers.

Morning 1: Removed about 4 dead and turned blue light on (going to run 24 hours per day for 3 days ) , my nano has a choice of blue or blue and white at same time. Added 3 sieve fulls of rotifers and a little more green water. When I first turned the light on all the fry started to swim at the top couple of mm of surface water. Over the next hour they began to spread out evenly through the tank.

Evening 1: Came home and added more pods. Removed 10L of tank water and another 6 dead fry. the removed water was then added back to my display reef tank and then 10L removed from the display. I then set up a drip above the fry tank and dripped in the 10L of water from my reef.

Morning 2: Removed 5 dead and fed more rotifers, removed 10L of tank water and replaced in the same way I did the previous night. Tried to turn the white light on but as soon as I did I noticed some of the fry swim down to the bottom and point downwards, this stopped after I turned the light off again. When removing water from the tank I syphon any old dead rots from the base of the tank. Ive found having a white bottom to the tank helps to see them.

Very good.

I looked at the camera... I cant see them, yet. :)

They are small.

I will check it on a regular basis. I want to see how this turns out.

they are small but there is about 200 in there lol. Im sure as they grow they will become visible. The water is quite cloudy at the moment as im tinting the water with dry food for the rots

morning 3: turned the lights off last night for the first time, everybody needs some rest right? Woke this morning and came down to check how many casualties. All were lying on the bottom not moving with the exception of a few. I really thought I had lost most of them but after the lights went back on they all started to come round but they had lost there silver bellies due not hunting during the night. Just done a 30L change and added some more rots but im now struggling to keep up with rot demands as my buckets are thinning out. I have set up a 3rd bucket this morning to see if I can get enough going again. I don't think it helps with the large water changes as every time I dilute the rot numbers. Next water change im going to hold the 50 micron sieve in the top of the water and syphon through that which should leave the rotifers in the tank. About 10 losses this morning so far. I asked someone on a breeding forum what days carry the most losses and he said 3-8 so I may end up loosing them all yet, fingers crossed I don't!!!

Also just turned the white lights and they have stayed at the top so there eyes must be more developed now.

Congrats! 200 is a really good clutch.

If you warm up the water for the rots (heated to 78 degrees F), their metabolism will increase, so they should multiply quicker. The flip side is that the culture becomes more unstable so you have to keep a close eye on it. I have two buckets -- one heated and one not -- and my heated bucket always crashes (but I'm not good a cleaning them either).

great advice and thank you. Started a 3rd bucket up today and im going to leave that un heated and the other 2 are already slightly heated

Just used a paint programme to mark each fish in this pic as I counted them and bare in mind they are not all in the picture

332 clowns in there as of 6.00pm tonight. What is a surprise to me is that although I have not got any through metamorphis yet ive not used any phyto to raise ant rotifers and they are all doing so well.

Morning 6: Hope to see some metamorphis today. Not sure if any of them will survive it as its the most dangerous time for them and only the nutrition from the zm dry feed will be the deciding factor. Could we be seeing a change in the need to grow phyto to rear some fry on or using it for additions to reef tanks. Did a quick pic and count this morning and all though not all the fry were on the pic I managed to count and mark 308. Anyway that's it for now and I will update when I see any metamorphis taking place.

One more question, when the a fry goes into metamorphis how long does it take, is it like2 hours or more like 24 ?

just realized that I didn't have the photo on full screen and I couldn't see the bottom part of the pic. just carried on counting and I have 386 still alive

Ok, morning 7 and nearly all the fry are going through metamorphosis. I have about 40 through it so far and the rest in the process. Cant tell you how pleased i am with the zm dry invert feed, no phyto has been used to rear the rotifers that fed them.

this is all i see on the camera
