Clowns not hosting the carpet

Sup RC,

I have four false clown in my 120g. I bought a red carpet about 3 months ago and they still won't host it. What can I do so that they will play in it?

There is not a lot you can do except be patient. Ocellaris clowns (false clowns) do not naturally associate with haddoni anemones. Sometimes they will go into them in an aquarium, sometimes not. Be careful not to try to force them or scare them into the anemone. Haddoni carpets have a strong sting and have been know to kill clowns that have not acclimated themselves to the anemone.

+1 there is no sure fire way to get them to host even though some people will swear by some techniques. Patience....also a bubble tip might be more prefered to that type.

My clowns love my green carpet. They are all over it all the time. I had a bubble tip that well went south. The carpet survived and the clowns have made friends.

Kool, thanks guys for the info. I think my red carpet is splitting or something, it's growing another small mouth on the side. Its pretty kool. I will post a picture of it soon.

Stichodactyla carpets do not split/clone. However, it's not rare for a carpet to develop two mouths, nor does it harm the nem in any way.

Here is the picture of my carpet with a second mouth, it look like a smaller carpet is attach to it.

Woohoo, finally after 4 month my clowns decided to hosting the carpet. Actually the carpet move from the right side of the tank to the left side where the clowns sleep at night. It took the carpet one week to move. But any now I'm happy now.

These fish are so over bread they dont know there soposed to. I have a pair of tomato clowns that host all my coral and just laid eggs again.

How a fish is bred has nothing to do with how long it takes to use an anemone as a host. You'd be surprised to see how quickly captive bred fish are attracted to their natural host anemone when present. However, it could take a long time, sometimes never, for a clown to use an anemone that's not its natural symbiont.

This is similar to cats and catnip. What you're implying is that cats can be domesticated (captively bred) to the point where they are no longer attracted to catnip.

D-nak, did you supplement your tank with t5 yet? I just adding t5 to my tank, it help out a lot with the back n front of the tank.

I have everything but the bulbs, not sure which color I want yet. My 120 has a thick plastic brace that runs right down the center of the tank. It was fine when I had halides, but when I switched to LEDs the center of the tank got noticeably dimmer. Unfortunately, everything in the very middle of the tank browned out. My hope is that a pair of T5s will mitigate this.

Sorry guys,

no update on the second mouth yet. Its still the same size. Now that the clowns are hosting it the other mouth doesn't really open up. I will keep you guys update if anything change. thanks for asking.
