The price was right around 240k after all the options were thrown in. That machine was at the last company I worked at. Now I'm forced to work on 5 axis Fadals and trying to squeeze home projects in is not fun. You can actually pick up a Haas Mini-Mill or a Haas TM series Mill relatively cheap and by cheap I'm saying right qround 20k.

well seeing bill spoke up about my unit. here it is. its a 2'x3' deck, runs on 220v and has a 2 hp liquid cooled head. thats what the 2 orange lines running into the router head are. its an awesome little unit. and you can see i modified it so eveything is self contained on wheels. i just have to hook up 110 to the computer and 220 to the router. this is not your run of the mill hobby cnc. but its not a $50,000 machine either. the biggest thing to remember is to get the right software to run a cnc properly. it cost me as much for the right software as the router cost me. to get a set up like this with all the programs you will spend 10k on it.

So now you have a 3 axis machine, you can cut your flanges and ramps all at one time!

Can you use a high end CAD/Cam system with your system. That will eliminate the need to manually code ramping movements. I do all my programming with SolidWorks, Surfcam, and MasterCam. I use SolidWorks for all my drawings and assemblies makes it a little bit easier when it comes to actually putting toolpaths down.

i have solid works but im not very good with it ye. i have to read the manual more to find out some of the features. but for cam i use a different program. i also have type 3 which is an art type 3d cad/cam program but the manual it huge! i havent had alot of time to check out all the features yet.

I did a lot of research and looking into what would be needed and I just could not justify the price for what I was going to end up using it for. I think that it would be building would be cooll and the programing would be fun but I do not think that I would end up using it all that much.

There is a set of really nice free plans, One of the good ones is the JGRO plans. I have about 700$ in mine and it is 99% done, This includes the 150$ mach3 lic, or you could get away with the 30$ turbocnc lic.
