collecting season for carpets?

Is there a collecting season for Haddoni Carpets? My LFS says he hasn't seen them available for quite some time.

Depends where they come from... Every now and then there are disruptions in local supply - most of the time due to political upheaval. Red Sea fish are currently hard to get - due to terrorism concerns, the situation in Egypt, and the situation in Somalia. Have you seen how expensive Purple Tangs are currently? For a long time Sri Lanka was a source for carpet anemones, but the export trade was almost shut down due to rebellion violence. You can also have disruptions due to environmental concerns or environmental activist governments like what has happened in Fiji, Palau, or Tonga.

These disruptions sometimes shut down exporters entirely - or require them to move to another island - so you can sometimes see a 6 month or 1 year disruption. In one case an exporter that used to export anemones and clams, was forced to move due to government regulation, and ended up on another island where they switched to designer "combo" rock instead of clam farming. Additionally the new island had fewer anemones, so it was not commercially viable for them to export.

Exports that come from south of the Equator tend to skew towards winter months (in the North) - because their summer weather is normally much calmer than winter (which is their rain/storm season). I spoke to a collector in Australia that explained to me that during their Winter (our Summer) he could only collect larger fish because his time in the water was shorter and seas were rougher. Large fish are sometimes collected with set or drift nets that don't even require dive time - versus small reef fish and inverts that almost always need to be collected by hand.

I've talked to many LFS while trying to find my haddoni. I was told most came from sri lanka and usually ship in the summer. However, this year has be lacking and most stores don't see many haddonis.

I do know a few stores that stock tons of haddonis so they must have a good connection to a collector somewhere.

I can't believe that "most" haddonis come from Sri Lanka. The wholesalers that I know of and the local LFSs that do direct shipping in my area get almost all their haddonis (and anemones in general) from Indonesia.

Most of our generic livestock (inverts, fish, corals) comes from Indo. Its just cheaper.

The store I work at rarely has any issues getting haddonis in. We generally get 4-5 every week or 2. You just have to find the right source for them...

do they normally arrive in good shape? would you mind telling me the mortality rate? i ask b/c i see how they are not good shippers and that the best chances of getting a healthy one is through LFS. is this b/c LFS are able to pick them up at the airport immediately after they arrive or just b/c they go through a few of them in order to get a healthy one?

maybe b/c its been so hot here they just dont want to risk ordering any in. we had 28 straight days over 100 and like 40 total this summer. its cooling off now so hopefully better stuff will be available.

100 gigs removed from the ocean for aquariums, only 10 lived for shipping to final destination, 90 of them went to the toilet.

of the 10 that survived for shipping to final destination, maybe 2 will ultimately survive.

Such a sad thing if you ask me. maybe limiting the number collected will ensure proper handling and increase survial rate?

Or maybe not collecting them all? It's vegas with these species. All in the wrist ;)
