I catch fish here in American Samoa. To date I've caught yellow boxfish, dragon wrasse, picasso triggers, convict tangs, sailfin tangs, scopas tang, bannerfish, radiata lionfish, juvenile emperor angelfish, red and black clownfish, papuan tobies, small wrasses. I've used a slurp gun to catch loads of stuff but it has very specific circumstances were it works and it is horrible the rest of the time. I've read they can damage your fish as well so stopped using it. I much prefer using my cast net while snorkeling. I follow a fish for a bit and try to herd it into a refuge on a lone rock or coral head then drop the net over it. With some patience and some tickling the fish will eventually bolt and stick in the net. For clowns and little stuff you can use a couple hands nets. Startle the fish with one and nab it with the second when it bolts. Picking rocks up from the reef and holding them over a tub is a good way of finding all sorts of neat critters as well. I've caught morays, scorpionfishes, lizardfishes, octopuses, mantis shrimp, pistol shrimp, and a tonne of gobies and blennies this way. I think going out 'shopping' on the reef and catching your own fish is as fun or more fun than the actual keeping part!
