Come Give Us Your Opinion!

Sorry, I meant to get this up yesterday.

We wanted to get everyone's opinions on what you want to see at upcoming meetings. Last meeting we had a demo for Mj mods and also had a fragging lesson. Both were very informative and actually showed us how to frag and how to modify Maxijets, making us more comfortable to do it if it's your first time. I believe next month is about culturing phytoplankton.

We would like to hear what you want to learn about. This can be in the form of a quest speaker, in more demonstrations, or possibly something new. All opinions matter and each will be considered. We hope to make as many people happy with what is being presented at the meetings. So tell us what you would like to learn about!! :)

Acrylic working techniques maybe, also maybe the wavebox that was done on here with a modded maxijet. Just a couple random thoughts.

Nick, what aspects of acrylic work would you want to see.....I only ask cos thats a broad definition. Would basics of cutting and gluing fit in with what you would want to see, or something more along the lines of a project.

Paul.

Brook....and any one else...

Would any be interested in making DIY nightlights (same as we made last year)

Paul.

How to make a sump out of acrylic. What makes a sump a sump. Everyone I see is almost totally different from another.

The sump is what I was thinking as well radcat....Because honestly I have problems witht he baffles in it and would like to get experienced advice. The night lights would be great and I volunteer my soldering expertise and a really nice metcal iron if I can get one borrowed in time.

I didn't get to see the nightlights last time, so I'd love to learn about them! I just wouldn't ask me to do it :)

I open suggestions on OKAA about every three months to see what we want comming up and place polls.

Acrylic work would be good. Custom tank jobs as well. Aqauscaping.

I also love guest speakers, they can be a chore to get but its always good to have new ideas and opinions tossed into the mix with Q and A

I also personally do lots of powerpoint presentations on types of fish. The knowledge of SW fish is so limited and I am by no means an expert on anything yet however a number of club members are and getting them to do presentations on certain fishes would work well. I can only talk about FW fish right now.
However in the next few months I will be doing a clownfish presentation at the OKAA.

I think it would be good to hear about different types of algae. I've seen some amazing tanks, and it seems everyone has problems with either bubble algae, hair algae, red &/or green slime algae, etc. I think it would be neat to hear a speaker on cause & effects of algae and simple ways to prevent it. I hear this has been done before, but I don't know how long ago. I'd love to hear it.

For the acrylic work I wonder if we could get Chris to demonstrate some of his techniques. Then we could give away the sump/fuge made as a raffle prize.

I think the photography idea brought up awhile back was a great suggestion.

Also, how about a light comparison? We could discuss different ligthing options, new technology (like the LEDs), and the club owns a PAR meter, maybe we could take some readings at someone's house w/ multiple tank lights.

How about a brief lesson in chemistry - how most of our tests are related?

Some aspects of these may be old hat to our more seasoned members, but I think we could probably still come up with new information or ways of doing things. I'll try and think up some other suggestions too.

I think the building of a sump would be possible.

Couple of problems and mabey a solution.
First how much time would I have, building a sump in just a couple of hours for a meeting would be impossible.

The sump would need to be of a reasonable size. If the sump is to large or complex we would not have time to complete it.

If I have material before the meeting I could pre cut the basic parts, that is easy enouph to explain how I do it.

Next would be just putting it together, this again is something I normally do over a two day period but it can be done much faster with extra care of the welds.

The last part of building a sump is doing a water test and polish the edges. This part would be impossible and would need to be done by who ever gets the sump. Of course I would also show how I polish edges.

Now then the rest would be up to Paul, but either the club could buy the material and raffle off the sump, or an individual can pay for the material and take the sump home.

Pro: Individual buys material and gets what they want in a sump.
Con: Club raffles off sump and it may not work for your needs.

It would also be a good idea to be somewhere we could use 4 to 5 hours building a sump, talking inbetween welds, and enjoying a nice tank.

For the sump making to work you could raffle it off then talk to the person that won and get the size they are looking for. Then you could build it at the next meeting?

How about that someone wanting a sump pay for the materials ahead of time and then walk home with it. That'll make sure whoever ends up with it really needs one...

Not a bad idea my idea sump would probably take to long since I want a larger sump/fuge so instead of buying one I'll just watch and take notes. But hey this idea works out for someone wanting a smaller sump.
