Come with me on my Custom 77 Gallon setup

The finnex heater comes with an external controller. Not the most accurate thing in the world but... better than the RK blowing my heaters.

As for the duration of heater failures, the first lasted about 2 or months and the last about three weeks.

Yes to the set up. Before I wanted the more accurate RK controller to control temp. So the RK was set to 78.5 degrees and the heater was set to 82 degrees. So the heater was protecting the tank from cooking.

Now I will have it set up exactly opposite. So the heater contoller is turning the heater on and off and the RK is protecting the tank from cooking.

Your real problem is that you need to put some big pumps on there to heat up the water! :D

Sailfins are such great fish! Mine will eat just about anything green. I feed it Nori, Chaeto and Gracileria from my sump, have also fed spinach and broccoli and even some raw carrot. But mostly the Nori and macroalgaes.

I agree I love the Sailfin. I am also looking to get a small Kole Tang.

Does anyone have a method of getting rid of Xenia? I have some on a rock where I really don't want it.

Thanks

Some bad news. One of my smaller frags, I don't know the name, overnight RTN'd. There is a small branch left, which I think I will cut off and try to save. Everything else in the tank is doing great. Strange how this happens sometimes.

I feel your pain. I had a monti colony that I bought nearly a year ago at a big discount because the LFS thought it was a goner. I grew it to 4x its original size. Last week it died in about 1 week. All my water parameters are excellent and have been double checked.

Silly question: what does RTN's stand for?

approximately???

approximately???

So, how many more decimal locations would it take to make this pretty darned close...

Dan,

The length would be approximatley 48.5410196624967..."

   Actually it is a never ending decimal, sooooo a bunch?

Here is how the Golden Ratio works. In our case it is length vs. height instead of how this drawing does it.

with the formula being

On other news, I went to the Coral Farmers Market today in Ontario, CA. Hosted by Art Petit and Steve Tyree.
I got a Marshall Island Green Fuzzy Thing (not really sure), a Tyree Tort, a Kelly Tort and a Turaki. Fantastic event.

I was there with our local club IEMAS (Inland Empire Marine Aquarium Society) IEMAS A bunch of us donated frags to sell to make some money for the club, we are fairly new. Great time to be had for all.

I saw you guys there. I was talkig with someone about raffle tickets vs membership numbers.

I too had fun at the place, thanks to Steve and everyone einvolved in putting this together.

I did not plan on buying anything except sojme raffle tickets, and I stuck to that plan, and scored a triple frag pack of som Australian Delicate Stag, and an AWE Red Planet Oxypoora, and an AWE Temme Pocillopora.

I need to do some homework on these bad boys to see what I got myself into. Hopefully, I will not torture thse poor souls, and can actually put some meet on those bones, that they call corals...

Does the principle still apply if the tank was 48.5 x 48.5 x 30 tall? Would this be a Golden Cube? ;)

Sorry Dan,
I didn't answer this question.

Yes the principal still applies since you don't look at the tank from above. Each viewing pane will be the Golden Rectangle. Very cool if you have the room!

Keith & Bill, have been tagging along on this thread and noticed you both were Inland Empire guys. Noticed info about IEMAS. I wasn't aware of an Inland Empire club? Thought the closest ones were So Cal in Irvine or San Diego. Good news! I have been in contact with IEMAS, joined the site today and will look forward to attending the club meetings and joining the club in the future. Hope to see you guys there in March. I'm in Hemet

I just don't get it.. what's the purpose of the golden rule? Did I miss it somewhere in this thread? Is it to minimize reflections off the glass or maximumize water flow or something else?

Keith here's my build photos http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q169/bbehring/

Just set her afloat this weekend! Water & salt in now. Will probably add the sand tomorrow night.

Alot of my build came from dandy7200. Dan had built a 54 corner bow front some time back and provided me with lots of his insight, photos and threads to read. Thanks Dan!

Keith I have really enjoyed your build. Almost made me wish I had gone the 77 route.

Brent,
Looks like a sweet set up. It would be hard to go wrong using some of Dan's ideas. He always comes up with really inventive ways to do stuff.

the Parthenon in Greece was built tothe Golden Rectangle and studies have been done that objects that have this ratio of length to side are more attractive to people. In fact, if a person's face is close to the Golden Ratio it is more attractive.

So I, being the math nerd I am, figured it would be cool to build my tank in that Ratio, since I am going for looks anyway.

I mentioned briefly in the very beginning of the thread.
