CONGRATULATIONS Are in Order!

Well, I put a mated pair of banded coral shrimp in my tank from Big Al's (purchased them during the FMAS membership drive there). That was only 2 weeks ago and it seems that they have already gotten "busy"...they are so small (only about 1" & 1 1/4" long bodies) I thought they might have to mature a bit longer before this happened. I guess they're quite comfy in their new home. I'm wondering if any of the hatched babies will thrive in my refugium once it is set up.

Anyway, here's a couple of shots of the proud mama-to-be...

Note the tell-tale greenish color in her abdomen...eggs...

Chris so your saying she stay pregnant all the time.? Mine has had a green belly for 6 or 7 months now.....or do they carry 9 months.....")

they are constantely carrying eggs, I will often see the "shrimpisitos" at night when I flash the light the are my corals and fishes favorites. i have never seen one make it to adulthood though!

Well, I guess constantely is probably not the proper word, lets just say that they will reload soon after a batch hatches, you will see at night a million miniature shrimps in the water colum and her tail empty on that night, with luck you will see the momma shaking her tail and releasing the shrimps in the current, a couple of days later she will be carrying a new sack of eggs under her tail.
I guess it must get pretty boring in a tank with out natural predators no need to hunt or work having to clean some sharks mouth, Hum, never really thought about this, I wouldn't mind that life at all.

Yes, Brian, those are eggs! Someone in your tank is enjoying them when they hatch out...I'm sure they would thank you for it if they could!

Yeah, Randy had a couple a few years ago (before I took over the tank) and the female was in a constant cycle of fertilizing and hatching out her eggs. I kind of felt bad for her...since they never had a chance at survival...but I guess invertibrates don't know any different ;). I'm sure the tank enjoyed the feast! I was just wondering if some got sucked down my overflow if they would survive to adulthood in the refugium. I'll find out I guess as soon as I get it running.

Anyway, I also have an update...the eggs were in the center of her abdomen before and now they are on the bottom of her tail. Here's a photo...

You can really see the individual eggs against the red stripe on her tail. It's pretty cool. As I said, I didn't think they'd get to work that fast:smokin: !

I'd imagine that they would indeed end up living if ANY ever made it to the refugium. But this would most likely be the only way.

not sure about inverts but I kno when my clowns first started laying eggs, I would get as many out with a turkey baster and put them in my refugium...but sadly none ever made it! but it is worth a try!!
