Conspicuous angelfish

I would have went out and bought a tank and Qt till you were done.

I've had my LFS looking for one under 5 for awhile. This is the smallest Conspic he had ever been offered.

I believe he was offered it on Thursday before last, so the 27th ( not looking at a calendar)

I have a 40B QT set up and ready. But with the finish on my DT, up in the air ,I didn't want to purchase the fish. Just didn't make sense to buy the fish without a set end game. It was the Friday before the Napa Trade show, so that would have been the 28th. Which means Monday morning, the 2nd, would have been the morning we made the final decision. The Rep said he had another buyer as soon as I gave the word. I figured it was most likely Reefwise, as they posted a conspic to their website a few days later. But it was 6".

Apologies, didn't mean to cause some sort of confusion. I just though it was funny I was just thinking of that fish, and There she was.

Oh well, maybe the next one. What an awesome fish!

So I've had my little lady for two weeks now. Everything is going great she eats like a champ. Including a sponge that had grown on one of the pieces of live rock that I put in qt from my sump.

I debated about doing a observation Qt for 3 to 4 weeks but I think I'm going to push that out to 10 weeks.

I don't plan to treat with anything, unless some of you think I should.

She's a beauty! Personally, if I wasn't planning on treating her, I would keep her in QT for longer time, at least 2 months. However, I think she's a decent size and could handle a round of Prazi. Otherwise just keep and eye on her breathing and swimming behavior.

(wifey doesn't mind me looking, lol) Noob question - If she's not treated & only observed for 2 months, I've always believed ich & other parasites sort of "lay in wait" for stress to trigger the parasite's active state? Wouldn't have to stress her out more by catching her & putting her back into QT with everyone else?

I don't know. My experience with ick or flukes is that it presents itself usually within the first two weeks of a fish being in captivity.

I believe the longer the fish is by itself the more comfortable it becomes in captivity. Thus allowing its natural immune system to gain strength too.

Yeah this is always the case without QT'ing. That's why I recommend a longer QT time if you decide not to medicate. It's basically up to the individual on what they're comfortable with and how observant they are.

Wayne would you proactively treat her with prazi if she was yours? If so when would you do the round, time frame in QT. Either way I'm going to keep her in quarantine for at least ten weeks.

If she were mine, I'd make sure she was eating well first, like 2-3 weeks. Once she's coming up to you for food, I'd do ttm. I personally do 5 transfer but that's just because I'm paranoid. On the last transfer, I'd do a round of Prazi. I've noticed that some Angels may stop eating around day 3. If that happens, I take them out of the prazi water on day 3. I've read that Prazi is effective for only 3 days anyway. I'd make sure she's eating well again in qt and once she does and seems healthy, You can try ansecond round of prazi a week later to kill any potential eggs that hatched after the first round. I personally don't find a need for a second round of prazi becuase I essentially take the fish out of the prazi water anyway and the find the likelihood of transferring any fluke eggs low. Once she's eating well again, she's ready for your DT.

I've found that to be the least stressful yet, minimally effective medication course for QT and haven't had any issues yet. If I know the fish are succeptuble to a certain parasite like tangs are to ich, I do a 45 min formalin bath (1ml/g.) during each transfer of ttm. This is what Karen does and she's had great success w it. Good luck and keep us updated!

Oh, it's definitely my pleasure. More about the Formalin baths (I found all this info out courtesy of Karen). Formalin is 37% formaldehyde. Since I live in California and they ban essentially all carcinogenics, it's almost impossible to find at a lfs. I found a product at an online store called petsolutions which Karen said is was exactly what I needed and priced well to boot! During the baths, make sure the water is well aerated as formalin depletes the oxygen in the water.

After each transfer and bath, make sure the tanks/buckets are well cleaned because the ich that have detached (I can't remember the scientific name of this phase) are very sticky and like to attach onto anything. I personally do a light bleach bath for a couple of hours and use amquel to neutralize everything. Then this is followed by letting everything dry under the sun for at least. I figure the UV rays kills/neutralizes the rest.

Good news is here in the "midwest" states don't seem to care about people as much as the west coast so formalin is at virtually ever pet store that carries fish supplies. Place I worked at years ago treated their FW and FO SW systems with Formaldehyde and the community net holding buckets were full of formaldehyde to prevent disease transfer

Yeah, actually there's a lfs who uses straight formaldehyde in their FO system. They're pretty old school and have been around for a long time. I always thought it was more scarry than weird. I guess I'm a wimp because I put on a latex glove every time I use the stuff.

I have used it without gloves so I know it won't hurt you per se but I agree you say formaldehyde and it doesn't seem like something that goes with fish. Not a wimp, just SMART

lol, no just living in Cali for all these years has softened me up big time. My friends tell me so every time I go back East to visit.
