Cool Fish on Diver's Den

Why H zoster? Anything special about them?
In my professional live H zoster is herpes zoster. You really don't want to get this zoster.

Anyone see the gold lightning maroon clowns on DD last night? I can't believe ORA is breeding them... That's not cool now the market is gonna be full of hybrids, trying finding a pure Darwin clown that you know 100% is a Darwin and not just an offspring from a orange occ. x Darwin
Sorry for the rant
I'm right with you there. I think designer clownfish are a real pest...
I would also be interested in a pure Darwin clownfish pair, but unfortunately you can't be sure that what you find in stores is the real deal and not just some designer cast-off.

As for the gold lightning maroon - besides messing up the gene pool it won't be any different than your regular lightning maroon...

Plesiops Corallicola "“ (Bluegill Longfin)

That is a really nice looking fish. That mouth though :( How large do they get? Oh, never mind. I just saw the price. Wow though, that is a really nice looking fish to the point of striking.

Why do you say this Minh? I just purchased the trio-did I make a mistake?
Myles

If you bought the trio off DD from the other day they were mislabeled (which was my earlier point). They aren't black zosters but rather yellow pyramids. Hopefully you got what you were expecting ...... and that you don't have shingles :(

Oh, I didn't catch that they were mislabeled-I thought they were yellow pyramids (H. polylepis) and looked healthy which is why I purchased them. They are being shipped monday for a tues arrival.
Thanks, Simon

Where i can find this fish (Location, region etc)?

I wouldn't know, that is the first time I have seen it. Thus my comment. I'd wager DD/Live Aquaria when available. Read the link though under the fish, sounds like they can eat small fish.

Pretty fish though. Out of my reach though because it sounded like they can, or do, eat small fish and I have a few Damsels.

Philippines to Indonesia and likely beyond. They are not rare in the wild, just reclusive and not collected very often.
They live on leeward sides (sheltered land side) of reefs or in the rubble zone right behind the reef.

I had one of those before (a long time ago) and he didn't cause any trouble. Though it's definitely not a good fish for a shrimp tank or one with bite-sized fish.

Biota is breeding them, so you can get them via your LFS or see if DD lists them again.
The first I got is still chasing the second whenever he sees it, but that seems to be as far as it goes. The 10 gallon QT I have them in has a lot of Caulerpa in it for them to hide in.

Just ordered this guy:

Chinstrap Jawfish (Opistognathus sp 6)

Already have one in my 100 gallon tank.

These guys are great for reef tanks:
- they have great personality.
- they are the least jumpy jawfish of them all. Even in QT my current guy never attempted to jump.
- they don't need deep sand - a small rock cave on the bottom and maybe 1/2 of gravel will be enough for them to construct their burrow.
- they are peaceful, even with other jawfish. Despite their large mouth they don't seem to go after small fish.

Their only downside is that they hardly ever leave their burrow, and if they do they just dart out to snap up food and dart right back into their burrow. So you generally just see their head.

I'm never to tell anyone their kids are ugly but wow, night and day difference between juveniles and adults. I'll have to do some more homework on these fish because they are really neat looking. So I have Damsels, concern one. How are they with small snails or micro hermits? I have a pretty hefty population of strombus snails. Few small micro hermits.

Maybe I just stick with the Marine Beta that is already on my list - but even that is a wait and see because I really want a Pygmy Wrasse. Go figure.

I doubt that these guys go after snails, hermits or even crabs. They just don't have the teeth to deal with hard shells.
Small fish and shrimp might be on the menu if they fit into their mouth.

Marine Bettas are only a danger to shrimp, but I have never seen them to show any interest in fish. And I tried to feed my Marine Bettas frozen gobies (bycatch from catching the feeder shrimp), but they flat out refused to take them despite them being easier to swallow than the shrimp. My clownfish (ocellaris!!!) on the other hand would force them down with gusto. And those gobies were not tiny!
In my experience Marine Bettas (Calloplesiops altivelis) are perfectly fish safe.

Has anyone ever kept a hamlet or know anything about their husbandry? I like the look and am tempted but know nothing about them other than they are related to groupers. I assume they eat crustaceans but how are they with other fish and what are their feeding habits?
Thanks,
Myles
