Cool Fish on Diver's Den

I am with you SDE, there are plenty of angels that do but not this one. Glad I am not alone.

On the other hand the clarion does.... those bright oranges and iridescent blues are what get me going more than the rarity.

Don't know. But its 20% off right now.

Call me crazy, but idk about this fish, just doesn't do it for me. Granted at this point don't have a tank or funds big enough for it, but even if I did...pass. I know this is against how most people feel haha.

I think you're both crazy. The Conspicuous has much more allure than some run of the mill, washed out colored CB Clarion. To each their own I suppose but I would take a Conspicuous over a Clarion any day. Ok maybe the CB colors aren't washed out but the patterns are definitely different and less striking then their wild counter part. Since we are talking crazy I would actually like a Kingi and a Personatus more than the Conspic

I'm looking for interesting fish, not rare.
Though some of the fish I'm looking for are rare in the trade because no one seems to want them.
Plesiops coeruleolineatus (google: "/2011/11/17/male-plesiops-coeruleolineatus/" for some nice pictures) is for example a very interesting, relatively small and reef safe fish (exception small shrimp and maybe tiny fish) that is by no means rare in the wild, but it rarely gets collected for export.
I had a single one in the past but never managed to find another to make a pair.

As for the conspicuous - that is one of the angel species (in fact all Chaetodontoplus) that should be kept in pairs to get the most of them. I have seen many fully grown C. duboulayi pairs at DeJong and they were already impressive. But a C. conspicuous pair in a large enough tank must be a real stunner.

Dream fish. Definitely on my fish bucket list.

... Would be difficult to pair two up

Shouldn't be as long as you are able to find small ones.
With many reef fish making pairs is as easy as putting two slightly differently sized juveniles together. Most, like all angels, are hermaphrodites capable of sex change from female to male. Some others are even capable of changing back an forth (hawkfish, gobies, dottybacks)

I meant not may small (3") or less, heck even 4" Conspicuous available. I'm getting a 4.5-5" one and would like to pair it up eventually but worry it won't end well. Then I have a rather expensive fish that I will have to try and rehome which would be a nightmare

For the right price I would rehome it in my tank!!!!

I would think any conspicuous under 5 inch should still be female or even immature. So if you can get at least one below that mark it should be easy to pair them.

I haven't seen any mature regal angels below that size - with those it's easy to tell by the development and size of their gill thorns. I've seen hundreds of those side by side and it is quite easy to tell. All mature specimen were well over 5 inch long.

The C. duboulayi pairs I've seen were also all in the 8 to 12 inch range.
