I know I never put up pics. I got a puffer last week at the LFS. Labeled a sharpnose puffer, but seems to be a juvenile southern puffer, see link:

Anyone ever kept these in aquaria? I used to catch them, or a close relative, in the ocean bay in NJ.

I've caught them occasionally in the south shore bays of Long Island during the summer and early fall. Cool little puffers, but aren't all puffers :D

They typically stick close to the bottom where they will often dig into the sand to hide and wait for some dinner to swim past, when they are feeling to lazy to go hunting.

Thanks, I really like it. It nests in the sand, but it also swims around, especially when it sees me. It has learned where the food comes from. :) It is a really different looking puffer, with a HUGE, horsey looking head. They are common on the east coast and in Florida. I'm surprised we don't see them in the pet stores more.

I am very lame with photos, but I'll try to get some pics and post. It'll be a week or so, I am in the process of job hunting/interviewing right now...

Very cool Lisa! Bill, I used to catch baby puffers in LI sound in the summer with a sein (20+ years ago). Are these the same species just as juvis?

In the Sound it was the closely related Northern Puffer. Typically only find the Southern Puffers on the south shore of the island, and than it's only a scattered few mixed in with abundant Northerns.

That website is horrible, the photographer most likely killed the puffer.

While I certainly don't condone picking a puffer out of the water and making it puff it for a photo op, it won't kill them.

BTW, sneaking back on when you've been banned is a good way to make that ban permanent.
