Copperband Atacking My Clam

Hey guys,
have you guys out there ever have a copperband go after your clams cause i just noticed mine going after one of my clams, the fish has been in the tank for over two weeks and eats all the frozeb food i throw in there.

Copperbands are supposed to be completely reef safe. Mine eats like a pig but never attacks any inverts or clams in my tank.

Does your just occasionally pick or is it an all out attack? Mine will occasionally pick at the LR.....

that is what i thought until i came home tonight to find him pciking at the mantle of the clam, i thought he was just getting something that was on the mantle and it did atleast 3 times from the time i came home.

Hope it's just a phase your CB is going through.

Kids........ Always up to mischief..........:bounce1: :fish2:

Hopefully which was posted already that it is just a phase. I have a squamosa and a maxima with my CB and it doesn't bother them at all. For that matter I never seen it eat any of the frozen foods I offer it either mysis etc....but it's nice and healthy cleaning off the rocks and sandbed of worms and dusters.

Interesting. My CB will only eat mysis. One day I put some brine in and it refused to eat it. In fact most of my fish refused the brine shrimp.

I guess they all know what's good and are a little spoiled to boot.....

Life outside the reef could be low stress and good......:bum:

By the way, What do you feed your CB? Does it eat anything other than ala cart from your LR?

Copperbands in nature, generally eat clams from what I've read. I think about 1 in 3 in our reef tanks go after clams and the smaller the clam the more likely they will pick at it. I have one and it hasn't bothered any of my clams.

I have heard that they are more likely to go after a clam that has been added after the CBB.

I am also curious to hear what everyone else's CBB's eat. I ordered a "trained" CBB that has been in quarantine(20 gal xenia filter) for a week. I was told that it was eating aiptasia, mysis, and flake. So far he has eaten all the small aiptasia and fanworms in the xenia filter but he isn't interested in flake or brine. Maybe he is just getting plenty to eat from the rocks and dsb for now.

I will be putting him in my display tank soon which houses 4 clams. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't touch them.

I had the clams in there before the fish came along, my CBB eats brine and mysids and nothing more except for some bristle worms that are in the tank.

I notice my CCB pick at some of the clams when I forget to feed him the night before. I have 5 clams in the tank and it doens't bother any of them (except for when I foget to feed) .

mine gets fead atleaast twice a day, and on days when i am home all the time i will sometimes feed up to ssix times a day, i have a lot of anthias so my tank gets a lot of food.

CCB are definitely not always reef-safe. I've heard lots of cases where they start picking on clams and LPS, so I guess that it is more common for them to attack clams and LPS. That is one of the reason why you don't see too many people have CCB, they are a beautiful fish, but most people don't want to take the chance with them. Plus they are picky eaters.

This sounds like a poll question. In my opinion the risk of putting a CB in a reef tank is low. There are always exceptions but these fish are not aggressive. Also, in nature they thrive in a reef environment.

CBs are hard to keep and require excellent water conditions. They prefer reef environments and do not thrive well in any other type of environment.

Do we have a catch 22 here?

Can't live without a reef but also not safe in a reef???

We need a Poll.....

I have a CBB that started pecking at the mantle of my 5" crocea but totally left my 7" blue maxima alone.

He did this for a few days and then stopped when I started feeding him more. I feed PE Mysis.

I suggest buying some medium sized fresh clams, splitting one open, drag a razor lightly over the meat so the CBB can pick pieces off easily, and toss it in the tank. Mine goes nuts for it. Unfortunately so does the purple tang and he eats clam until he looks like he's going to burst.

Thanks i will try adn get some clams today!! Mmine pretty much did the same thing, was going after one of my Crocea but did not touch any of the other clams in the tank.

Good! Your CBB will likely love it once he sees that it's food, and I hardly think it'll teach him to eat the crocea.

I think I'll go by the store tonight and buy a few for my guy. I only feed once a day, and I really think CBB need to be fed at least 2x. It's really nice when you see a CBB with a lot of weight on him.
